NEW YORK – On Friday, the City College of New York women's basketball team welcomed CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)-leading Brooklyn to Nat Holman Gymnasium. Despite a 26-point effort by
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL), the Beavers (1-14, 1-5 CUNYAC) fell to the first place Bulldogs (10-5, 5-0 CUNYAC) by a 90-43 count.
After the teams traded the first two baskets of the game, Brooklyn went on an 11-0 run to open up a 13-2 advantage. The Bulldogs led 17-10 after one quarter and extended their advantage to 19 points, 38-19, before
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) sank a trey just before time expired in the first half.
CCNY pulled within 13 at 38-25 on Boehm's three-pointer to open the second half, but Brooklyn scored the next 12 points to push the margin to 50-25. It was a 69-31 game at the end of the third quarter, and the Bulldogs earned their eighth consecutive victory over the Beavers, 90-43.
Boehm scored 19 of her 26 points in the second half. She also paced the Beavers with eight rebounds and four assists.
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) finished with eight points, seven boards and three steals, while
Shanyah Lander (Mount Vernon, NY) handed out three assists. As a team, CCNY shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the floor, 20 percent (4-of-20) from three-point range, and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) at the charity stripe.
Chanel Jemmot and Ericka James led the way for Brooklyn with 16 points apiece. Jemmot also grabbed seven rebounds. Taylor George notched 13 points and Kailyn Richburg tallied 12 points to go along with five steals. Sarah Labiner, meanwhile, registered eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 40.9 percent (36-of-88) from the field, 30.3 percent (10-of-33) from downtown, and 50 percent (8-of-16) at the free throw line.
The Beavers wrap up the first half of their CUNYAC slate on Wednesday, when they host Lehman (1-15, 1-5 CUNYAC) at 5 p.m. The contest begins a busy stretch of four games in eight days for CCNY.
