ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – For the second time in three years, the City College of New York men's volleyball team is 5-0 to start the season. The Beavers (5-0) kept their season-opening winning streak intact with a 25-14, 25-19, 16-25, 25-7 triumph over Bard (1-2) at the Stevenson Athletic Center on Tuesday night.
CCNY took control of the first set with a 6-0 run that turned a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead. After Bard pulled within 9-7, the Beavers scored eight of the next nine points to increase their advantage to 17-8. A
Vukasin Bozic (Belgrade, Serbia) kill brought CCNY within two points of the set at 23-11, and CCNY earned a 25-14 win. The Beavers hit .308 in the opening stanza, slamming 11 kills while making just three errors in 26 attempts.
Bard jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, but CCNY eventually rallied back to pull in front 8-7. An
Andrew Chan (Flushing, NY) service ace followed by a
Carlos Maldonado Madrid (Honduras) and
Abdullah Khalid (Hicksville, NY) made it 12-9, then a 5-0 run extended the Beavers' advantage to 19-12. The Raptors scored the next three points, but CCNY responded with a 4-1 spurt to go up 23-16. Khalid smashed back-to-back kills to finish off a 25-19 win that gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Raptors again took the early lead, capturing four of the first five points. After the Beavers trimmed the margin to one at 4-3, Bard went on a 6-0 spurt to increase their cushion to 10-3. The Raptors then used a 4-1 rally to go up 22-15. CCNY took the next point, but Bard followed with three straight to clinch the set, 25-16, and extend the match.
After dropping the third set, CCNY rebounded with a dominant performance in the fourth. The Beavers scored the first four points of the frame and quickly extended that advantage to 10-1. Consecutive Chan aces brought CCNY to match point, and the Beavers closed out the 3-1 victory by taking the fourth set, 25-7.
Bozic
smashed a match-high 13 kills and completed a double-double with 11 digs. Maldonado Madrid tallied 11 kills and eight digs, while Chan
handed out 33 assists to go along with three aces.
Elijah Parks (Long Beach, NY) also had three of CCNY's 10 aces. The Beavers hit .159 (39-21-113) as a team.
Tristan Kozul had a double-double for the Raptors with 11 assists and 12 digs. He also tied for the team-high with six kills. Joshua Han added six kills of his own, while Sebastien Dufour registered four blocks. Angel Obergh finished with a match-best 14 digs, and Colin Schroeder tallied 10 digs, as Bard held a 44-41 edge in that category. As a team, the Raptors hit .011 (24-23-91) in the match.
The Beavers will now have a week off before returning to action. CCNY continues its nine-match road trip by visiting Mount St. Vincent (0-3) next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
