CCNY Falls to Medgar Evers In Overtime

NEW YORK – In a game that featured 14 ties and 12 lead changes, the City College of New York men's basketball team (0-12, 0-3 CUNYAC) suffered a 103-99 overtime loss to CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival Medgar Evers (4-9, 1-2 CUNYAC) at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Monday night.

The Beavers trailed 87-84 when Torrel Trim (Springfield Gardens, NY) sank a three-pointer from the right wing to tie it at 87-87 with 15 seconds left in regulation.  Medgar Evers used its final timeout and held for one last shot, but Marcus Lewis missed a layup with three seconds remaining and the contest went into overtime knotted at 87-87.

A pair of Romello Rashad (New York, NY) layups early in the extra session gave CCNY a 91-89 lead, but Medgar Evers responded with an 8-2 run to open up a 97-92 cushion.  After a pair of Tyrese Gibbs free throws gave the Cougars a 100-94 advantage, Rashad drained a trey on the other end to pull the Beavers within three, 100-97, with 31 seconds left.  Yassine Sakhi's (New York, NY) layup at the eight-second mark cut CCNY's deficit to two, 101-99, before Keison McIntosh hit a pair of foul shots to seal the 103-99 win for Medgar Evers.

Rashad finished with career-high 40 points while also notching nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.  His 40-point game was the first by a CCNY player since full records became available in 2009-10.  Rashad, who recorded a double-double against Baruch on Saturday, is averaging 27.3 points and 9.7 rebounds over his last three games.

He led four Beavers in double-figures, as Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY) had 21 points, and Sakhi added 14 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY), meanwhile, tallied 12 points, five boards and three steals.  As a team, CCNY shot 46.7 percent (35-of-75) from the floor, 37.9 percent (11-of-29) from long range, and 72 percent (18-of-25) at the free throw line.

CCNY got off to a hot start offensively, sinking four three-pointers in the first 8:37 to build an early 19-10 cushion.  However, after a Rashad layup made it 21-14, Medgar Evers went on a 9-0 run to take the lead, 23-21.  The Cougars eventually build a five-point gap, 28-23, but the Beavers responded with a 12-6 run, and went back in front, 35-34, on an Athanasios Kamberis (New Hyde Park, NY) trey with 2:41 left in the first half.  CCNY held a 43-39 advantage at intermission.

After the Beavers pushed the margin back to eight, 53-45, on a Sakhi layup at the 17:26 mark of the second half, the Cougars' Jonathan Grimsley scored eight straight points to pull his team even.  The teams would trade baskets for the next several minutes until Medgar Evers used a 7-0 spurt to turn a 63-63 deadlock into a 70-63 advantage.

However, CCNY countered with a 10-2 run of its own, and retook the lead, 73-72, on a Denard layup with 5:16 left in regulation.  The Cougars rallied to regain a four-point edge, 81-77, before CCNY made seven straight free throws to go back in front, 84-82, at the 1:48 mark of the second half.  Gibbs tied the game with two foul shots, then a Lewis layup gave the lead back to Medgar Evers, 86-84.  Grimsley was fouled with 37 seconds left, but went 1-for-2 at the line, setting the stage for Trim's game-tying trey.

Grimsley paced Medgar Evers with 29 points and 21 rebounds.  Mousa Sinera also registered a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards, while Lewis had 11 points, 10 assists and three steals.  Jafet Thomas added 16 points and three blocks for the Cougars, who went 36-for-74 (48.6 percent) from the field.  Medgar Evers shot 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three-point land and 69.4 percent (25-of-36) at the charity stripe.

On Wednesday, the Beavers conclude a span of three games in five days by visiting York (5-8, 1-2 CUNYAC) at 7:30 p.m.  The squads split the season series in 2018-19, with the road team winning each contest.
