NEW YORK – The City College of New York women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2019-20 season on Tuesday evening. After trailing by nine points at halftime, the Beavers (1-11, 1-2 CUNY Athletic Conference) outscored Medgar Evers (1-8, 0-3 CUNYAC) 28-9 in the second half to notch a 60-50 triumph at Nat Holman Gymnasium. It was CCNY's first victory under Head Coach
Michael Williams.
Medgar Evers led 19-15 after one quarter and extended that cushion to 26-15 midway through the second period. The Beavers responded with a 14-2 run over the next 2:05, going in front 29-28 on
Tianna Fumasoli's (Elizaville, NY) three-pointer with 4:41 left until halftime. However, Medgar Evers closed the half on a 13-3 spurt, with Vanessa Zambrano sinking a deep trey at the buzzer to make it 41-32 at the break.
After the Cougars' Cyndi White scored the first basket of the second half, CCNY held Medgar Evers scoreless for more than seven minutes. The Beavers went on a 9-0 rally over that span to pull within two points, 43-41. Shae-Quenna Brathwaite pushed the Medgar Evers lead back to four points at 45-41 before
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) drained a trey to cut CCNY's deficit to one, 45-44.
Shanyah Lander (Mount Vernon, NY) then put the Beavers in front for good with a layup late in the quarter. CCNY gradually pulled away in the fourth quarter, as Medgar Evers would get no closer than three after Boehm's layup to start the final period. The Beavers' final eight points all came on foul shots, as CCNY went 8-for-8 at the free throw line over the final 10 minutes to seal the 60-50 victory.
Boehm, the nation's leading scorer, finished with 32 points while also grabbing six rebounds. Fumasoli
added 15 points, while Lander
tallied six points.
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) pulled down 10 rebounds and
Harlean Williams (Staten Island, NY) grabbed nine boards.
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) collected eight rebounds for the Beavers, who shot 29.7 percent (19-of-64) from the field. CCNY went 7-for-24 (29.2 percent) from long range and 15-for-21 (71.4 percent) at the charity stripe.
White paced the Cougars with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Vanessa Zambrano also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards, while Brathwaite finished with 11 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists. Medgar Evers shot 31.1 percent (19-of-61) from the floor and outrebounded CCNY 48-45. The Cougars were just 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) from downtown and 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) at the free throw line.
CCNY concludes a span of three games in five days on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. visit to York (4-8, 1-2 CUNYAC). The Beavers have won nine straight against the Cardinals, with their last loss coming in 2015.
