JAMAICA, NY – On Wednesday night, the City College of New York women's basketball team traveled to York looking for its second consecutive win. The Beavers (1-12, 1-3 CUNY Athletic Conference) were unable to carry over the momentum from their victory over Medgar Evers, however, as the Cardinals (5-8, 2-2 CUNYAC) earned a 62-31 triumph at York College Gymnasium.
CCNY built an early 7-3 cushion and held a 9-8 advantage late in the first quarter. However, York's Keyla Cabrera hit a layup as time expired to put her team up 10-9 at the end of the period. The Beavers went back in front, 11-10, on
Tianna Fumasoli's (Elizaville, NY) layup with 8:09 left until halftime before the Cardinals used an 8-0 run to regain the lead.
York extended its edge to 30-18 at halftime, but CCNY scored the first five points of the second half, getting back within seven on a Fumasoli trey that made it 30-23 at the 7:33 mark of the third quarter. However, York ended the quarter on an 11-2 spurt to increase the margin to 41-25. The final score was 62-31, as the Cardinals earned their first win over CCNY since the 2014-15 season.
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL), who entered the game as the leading scorer, was held to a season-low 12 points. Fumasoli
also tallied 12 points while adding five rebounds.
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) grabbed 13 boards, and
Shanyah Lander (Mount Vernon, NY) notched three steals. CCNY shot just 16.1 percent (10-of-62) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from three-point land, and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) at the free throw line.
Kristina Sierra paced the Cardinals with a game-high 19 points. Destiny Drummond registered 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, and Mac-Dege Dessources finished with nine points, 16 boards and four blocks. Ellma Hodzic distributed five assists, while Diamond Jackson and Cabrera secured nine rebounds apiece. York shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from downtown, and 40 percent (8-of-20) at the charity stripe.
After playing three games in five days, the Beavers will now have a week off before returning to action. CCNY visits defending CUNYAC champion Hunter (7-6, 3-1 CUNYAC) next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
