CCNY Tops Medgar Evers For Second Straight Victory

BROOKLYN, NY – For the first time in a year, the City College of New York men's basketball team has won consecutive games.  The Beavers (3-19, 2-9 CUNY Athletic Conference) earned their second straight victory on Monday night, when they used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take a lead they would not relinquish en route to an 83-76 triumph over Medgar Evers (6-16, 3-8 CUNYAC) at the Cougars Cave.

The Cougars led 16-13 when Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) sank a layup and was fouled with 13:25 remaining in the first half.  He nailed the free throw to tie the game, then Oludamilola Arogundade (Bronx, NY) hit a layup to put the Beavers in front.  A Sakhi trey at the 9:29 mark capped the 10-0 rally and increased CCNY's cushion to eight points, 26-18.  The Beavers extended the margin to a game-high 11 points, 33-22, on a pair of Romello Rashad (New York, NY) free throws at the 2:12 mark, and CCNY held a 37-29 edge at intermission.

After Medgar Evers opened the second half on a 14-7 run to pull within three, 44-41, Rashad drained a layup to start a 10-2 CCNY spurt that brought the Beavers' advantage back to 11 points, 54-43.  The Cougars again chipped away, however, trimming their deficit to three points at 75-72 with under a minute remaining.  CCNY went 8-for-8 at the free throw line down the stretch, though, to cap the 83-76 triumph and secure its first winning streak since notching three straight victories from Feb. 1-9, 2019.

Five Beavers scored in double-figures, led by Sakhi's 21 points.  He added seven rebounds.  Rashad had his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 assists, and he also grabbed six boards.  Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY) finished with 18 points and five assists, while Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY) notched 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.  Arogundade contributed a career-best 12 points for CCNY, which shot a combined 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field.  The Beavers went 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) from downtown and 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the free throw line.

Mousa Sinera had 26 points and 25 points for the Cougars.  Dimitri Weeks and Marcus Lewis tallied 12 points apiece, while Elias Scott recorded 10 points.  Naquavah Jackson pulled down seven boards for Medgar Evers, which held a 52-31 edge on the glass.  The Cougars shot 35.1 percent (27-of-77) from the floor, 20 percent (5-of-25) from long range, and 68 percent (17-of-25) at the charity stripe.

On Wednesday, the Beavers return to Nat Holman Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with York (7-16, 3-9 CUNYAC).  CCNY would move ahead of the Cardinals in the CUNYAC standings with a victory, while a loss would eliminate the Beavers from CUNYAC Tournament contention.
