BROOKLYN, NY – On Monday night, the City College of New York women's basketball team wrapped up its three-game road trip by visiting CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival Medgar Evers. The Beavers (2-20, 2-9 CUNYAC) held a two-point lead at halftime, but the Cougars (6-15, 2-9 CUNYAC) rallied in the second half to earn a 67-61 victory at the Cougars Cave.
CCNY and Medgar Evers are now tied for sixth place in the CUNYAC with three games remaining. Only the top six teams qualify for the CUNYAC Tournament.
After Medgar Evers jumped out to a 7-0 advantage, a
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) layup started a 12-4 CCNY run that put the Beavers in front 12-11. However, the Cougars' Chaniya Daughtry sank a layup to give Medgar Evers a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Medgar Evers increased its cushion to 15-12 early in the second quarter before
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) sank back-to-back three-pointers to make it 18-15 in favor of the Beavers. Another Zambrano trey gave CCNY a five-point edge, 26-21, and the Beavers led by two, 31-29, at the break.
A layup by the Cougars' Cyndi White a minute into the third quarter evened the score at 31-31, the first of four ties in the period. Boehm hit a free throw midway through the quarter to break a 39-39 deadlock and start an 11-3 run that put the Beavers in front 50-42.
It was a 50-44 game after three quarters, and CCNY took its largest lead of the game, 54-45, on a Boehm jumper with 8:23 left. However, Medgar Evers responded with a 16-2 run to pull ahead, 61-56. Boehm sank a three-pointer to bring the Beavers back within two, 61-59, but the Cougars went 6-for-8 at the line down the stretch to close out a 67-61 victory.
Boehm finished with 30 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals in her first game back after missing two contests due to injury.
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY), meanwhile, recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 boards. Zambrano tallied 11 points, and
