NEW YORK – The City College of New York women's basketball team returned home on Wednesday for a matchup with York. Despite outscoring York 31-26 in the second half, the Beavers (2-21, 2-10 CUNY Athletic Conference) fell to the Cardinals (9-14, 6-7 CUNYAC) by a 73-52 count at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
York scored the first seven points of the game and led 21-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals extended their cushion to 47-19 before
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) drove for a layup just as time expired in the first half.
After York's advantage reached a game-high 33 points at 54-21 early in the third quarter, the Beavers went on a 13-3 run to cut their deficit to 57-34. The margin was 25 points, 63-38, entering the final period. CCNY then outscored the Cardinals 14-10 in the fourth quarter to pull within 21 points, 73-52, at the final buzzer.
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) finished with a game-high 23 points, and she also tallied three assists. Fumasoli
had 16 points and three steals, while
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) registered seven points and 10 rebounds.
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) added six points and five boards for the Beavers, who shot 26.8 percent (19-of-71) from the field. CCNY was 7-for-32 (21.9 percent) from three-point land and 7-for-10 (70 percent) at the charity stripe.
For the Cardinals, Mac-Dege Dessources recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Diamond Jackson contributed 14 points, while Destiny Drummond posted 10 points. Cami Melson ended up with eight points and 12 boards, and Ellma Hodzic distributed six assists. As a team, York shot 39.2 percent (31-of-79) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from long range, and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) at the free throw line.
CCNY concludes its home schedule on Saturday, when Hunter (13-10, 9-3 CUNYAC) visits Nat Holman Gymnasium at 5 p.m. The Hawks posted a 108-42 victory over the Beavers when the squads met on Jan. 15.
