CCNY Falls to Hunter In Home Finale

NEW YORK – The City College of New York women's basketball team had a one-point lead after the first quarter of its home finale against Hunter on Saturday.  The Beavers (2-22, 2-11 CUNY Athletic Conference) were unable to maintain that advantage, however, as the Hawks (14-10, 10-3 CUNYAC) notched an 80-41 victory at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

After Hunter opened up a 7-4 cushion midway through the first quarter, CCNY responded with six straight points to pull ahead 10-7.  The Hawks regained the lead, 13-12, on a Morgan Gress three-pointer with 48 seconds left in the quarter, but Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) sank a trey on the other end to put the Beavers in front 15-13.  Hunter's Maya Thompson then went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to make it a one-point game, 15-14, after 10 minutes.

Hunter retook the lead on a Theresa Leung three-pointer early in the second quarter, and the Hawks outscored the Beavers 35-12 in the period to take a 49-27 advantage into the locker room.  The Hawks extended the margin to 70-36 after three quarters and led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter before wrapping up a season sweep of CCNY with an 80-41 triumph.

Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) paced the Beavers with a game-high 24 points.  Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) finished with seven points and 10 rebounds, while Fumasoli had six points and nine boards.  As a team, CCNY shot 25 percent (15-of-60) from the field, 13 percent (3-of-23) from three-point land, and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) at the free throw line.

For the Hawks, Leung led the way with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists.  Janine Conway contributed 15 points and seven boards, and Phoebe Valenton tallied 12 points.  Kristina Krslovic, meanwhile, distributed eight assists.  Hunter shot a combined 39.5 percent (32-of-81) from the floor, 22.9 percent (8-of-35) from downtown, and 50 percent (8-of-16) at the charity stripe.

On Tuesday, CCNY concludes the regular season with a 5:30 p.m. visit to Lehman (1-23, 1-12 CUNYAC).  If the Beavers defeat the Lightning, they will clinch the sixth and final spot in the CUNYAC Tournament.  CCNY won the first meeting of the season between the teams, 65-56 on Jan. 22.
