BRONX, NY – Needing a victory to clinch a place in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Tournament, the City College of New York women's basketball team got just that on Tuesday night. CCNY (3-22, 3-11 CUNYAC) led nearly wire-to-wire in a 69-59 triumph over Lehman (1-24, 1-13 CUNYAC) at the Lehman College APEX that secured the final spot in the postseason field.
The Beavers got a three-pointer from
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) on their first possession and led 7-1 midway through the opening quarter. However, after a
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) trey put CCNY ahead 13-8 with 1:27 left in the period, Lehman ended the quarter on a 5-0 run. The Lightning pulled even at 13-13 on an Eriadna Vasquez jumper just before time ran out.
It wouldn't be tied for long, though, as CCNY opened the second quarter with treys by Fumasoli and Boehm. After Lehman got back within four at 20-16, the Beavers sank four three-pointers in their next six possessions to push the margin to 12 points, 32-20. CCNY outscored Lehman 26-9 in the period and extended its advantage to 17 points at 39-22 on
Shanyah Lander's (Mount Vernon, NY) layup with three seconds left in the half.
Lehman recorded the first five points of the third quarter before a pair of Boehm threes increased CCNY's lead to 45-27. Another Boehm trey late in the period (one of her eight in the contest) gave the Beavers their largest lead of the game, a 58-31 cushion.
After Fatomata Trawalleh hit a jumper to close the third quarter, she scored the first six points of the final period, as Lehman trimmed its deficit to 58-39. The Lightning eventually pulled within nine, 63-54, on Trawalleh's trey with 4:12 remaining, but Boehm immediately made it a 12-point game again when she was fouled on a layup and hit the free throw. Lehman would get no closer again, as CCNY held on for a 69-59 victory that wrapped up the sixth and final CUNYAC Tournament berth.
Boehm
posted her second double-double of the season with 30 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. It was the ninth 30-point game this year for the nation's leading scorer, who finished with regular season with an average of 27.2 points per game. She also dished out six assists on Tuesday night.
Fumasoli
registered 15 points and seven assists, while
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) notched nine points and seven boards.
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY), meanwhile, grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with eight points. As a team, the Beavers shot 36.6 percent (26-of-71) from the field, 35.3 percent (12-of-34) from long range, and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) at the free throw line.
Trawalleh finished with a game-high 41 points for the Lightning, including 29 in the second half. She added nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Valeria Rojas and Vasquez secured 13 rebounds apiece, as Lehman held a 59-54 edge on the glass. Lehman shot a combined 28 percent (23-of-82) from the floor, 20 percent (3-of-15) from three-point land, and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) at the charity stripe.
CCNY will be the No. 6 seed in the CUNYAC Tournament and visit third-seeded John Jay (13-12, 10-4 CUNYAC) in the first round at 1 p.m. on Saturday. This marks the second straight year in which the Beavers and Bloodhounds will meet in the CUNYAC Tournament. Last season, CCNY earned an 86-63 first-round victory over John Jay.
