STEVENSON, MD – On Saturday afternoon, the City College of New York baseball team began a string of seven straight games in Maryland by visiting Stevenson for a doubleheader. After dropping game one by an 8-2 count, the Beavers (1-3) rallied to force extra innings in the nightcap before falling, 6-5, to the Mustangs (4-1) in eight innings at Sugar Field.
In the second inning of game one, Stevenson took advantage of two CCNY errors to put eight runs on the board. The Mustangs sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, with Kevin Murray, Jr., notching two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs during the rally.
After Sam Downs limited the Beavers to just three
Stephen Peters (Cortlandt Manor, NY) singles and four walks over the first five innings, CCNY finally broke through against reliever Andrew Powell in the sixth.
Alex Erwin (Aliso Viejo, CA) drew a walk to open the inning, then moved to third on
Parker Stemkowski's (West Nyack, NY) double.
Ethan Angress (Mt. Sinai, NY) was up next, and he deposited a base hit into center field that knocked in Erwin. The Beavers added another run in the seventh when
Cooper York (Madison, WI) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on
Sean Riera's (Miami, FL) single.
Peter Komaroski (Jacksonville Beach, FL) (0-2) took the loss after yielding eight runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk over three innings.
Jacob Schwartz (New York, NY) tossed the final three innings and surrendered just two walks while striking out two.
Stevenson had seven hits in the contest, with Will Mesa finishing 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Downs (2-0) struck out seven over five innings to earn the win. Powell allowed one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout, while Jake Vanko pitched the seventh and yielded a run and a hit to go along with a strikeout.
The Mustangs got on the board immediately in game two, as Murray was hit by a pitch and scored on Alex Kidwiler's triple. Kidwiler then came across on a sacrifice bunt to make it 2-0, but the Beavers tied the game on
Griffin Bell's (Ridge, NY) two-run homer in the top of the second.
An RBI single by Tommy Holcomb in the bottom of the third put Stevenson back in front before CCNY posted a two-spot in the top of the fifth. Peters smacked an RBI double to left for the Beavers' third run of the contest, then scored on an error to give CCNY a 4-3 advantage. However, the Mustangs regained the lead on Kidwiler's two-run single in the sixth.
York led off the seventh inning with a single to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. After
Hamley Volquez (Bronx, NY) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Peters sent a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to drive in York with the tying run. Riera and Stemowski then knocked back-to-back singles, but the Beavers were unable to add another run and, after a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, the contest went into extra innings.
CCNY failed to score in the top of the eighth, and Stevenson's Nate Perkins began the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle. He moved to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. Blake Loewe then ended the contest with a single through the right side, giving the Mustangs a 6-5 walk-off win.
Peters finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs in game two, while Bell's homer was CCNY's first of the season. Stemkowski and York each had a pair of hits in the contest.
Edgar Rodriguez (Bayside, NY) got the start on the mound and went 5.1 innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked one.
Trent Alfred (Springfield Gardens, NY) took the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits with two strikeouts over 1.2 innings. Erwin went the final 0.1 innings and gave up one hit.
For the Mustangs, Kidwiler was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Murray went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Perkins and Loewe each added two hits, as Stevenson collected 13 total hits in the contest. Starting pitcher Tyler Graham yielded four runs (one earned) on five hits, struck out nine and walked one over five innings. Malcolm Edelin was charged with one run and three hits over two innings of work. He also struck out two. Vaughn Steeves (1-0), meanwhile, got credit for the win after pitching a scoreless eighth.
Up next for the Beavers is a twinbill at Hood (2-2) on Sunday afternoon. Game one gets underway at 12 p.m.
