CCNY Suffers First Two Losses of Season

MAHWAH, NJ – The City College of New York men's volleyball team saw its season-opening six-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon.  After dropping a 25-12, 25-23, 25-22 decision to St. Joseph's LI (6-4), the Beavers (6-2) fell to host Ramapo (7-4) by a 25-17, 25-14, 25-18 count at the Bradley Center.

St. Joseph's LI dominated the first set of CCNY's opening match, scoring the first five points of the match before extending its cushion to 10-3.  The Beavers responded with three straight points to pull within 10-6, but the Golden Eagles ended the set on a 15-6 run to earn a 25-12 win.

It was more of the same in the second set, as St. Joseph's LI used a 6-3 run to turn a 2-2 deadlock into an 8-5 advantage.  After the Beavers rallied back within one at 11-10, the Golden Eagles rattled off three straight points to increase their margin to four, 14-10.  CCNY again responded, though, cutting its deficit to one on Abdullah Khalid's (Hicksville, NY) kill that made it 15-14.  A CCNY service error gave St. Joseph's LI a set point opportunity at 24-22, and the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 set win.

There were 15 ties and three lead changes in a very competitive third set.  A kill by Elijah Parks (Long Beach, NY) put the Beavers in front 21-19, but the Golden Eagles countered with four straight points to go up 23-21.  St. Joseph's LI took the third set, 25-22, to close out a 3-0 victory.

Vukasin Bozic (Belgrade, Serbia) paced the Beavers with 11 kills.  He also notched seven digs.  Parks tallied eight kills on .304 hitting, while Carlos Maldonado Madrid (Honduras) contributed seven kills and six digs.  Andrew Chan (Flushing, NY) dished out 29 assists, and Jonathan Liao (Jackson Heights, NY) finished with a  team-high 14 digs.  The Beavers hit .152 (33 kills, 18 errors, 99 attempts) overall, including a .323 clip (16-6-31) in the third set.

Matt Cole had a match-high 18 kills on .429 hitting for the Golden Eagles.  Pal Curaro hit .348 with 10 kills, while Will Flohr collected 15 digs.  Jason Siriban handed out 26 assists and Michael Lane distributed 14 assists for St. Joseph's LI, which notched a team hitting percentage of .278 (41-14-97).

After CCNY took a 6-5 lead in the first set against Ramapo, the Roadrunners went on a 14-3 run to go up 19-9.  The Beavers responded with an 8-3 spurt to pull within five at 22-17, but Ramapo captured the next three points to claim the set, 25-17.

Ramapo opened up a 3-1 lead to begin the third set before CCNY rallied to tie the score at 4-4.  However, the Roadrunners captured the next five points to go back in front.  Ramapo's advantage reached nine points at 19-10, and the Roadrunners captured the set by a 25-14 count.

In the third set, it was CCNY that built the early advantage, as the Beavers went in front 6-4 on a block by Bozic and Stormer Horton (Waimea, HI).  After a 6-2 Ramapo run gave the Roadrunners a 10-8 lead, CCNY captured six of the next 10 points to tie the score once again at 14-14.  However, Ramapo responded with a 9-2 run to go up 23-16, and the Roadrunners closed out the sweep with a 25-18 third-set triumph.

Bozic finished with a team-high six kills, while Chan had 16 assists to go along with five digs.  Liao also tallied five digs for the Beavers.

For the Roadrunners, Andrew Finnegan led the way with 10 kills on .333 hitting.  He also recorded five digs.  Lucas Inglis tallied 26 assists, and Josh Titus added 11 assists for Ramapo.  Tyler Plitt paced Ramapo with eight digs.  The Roadrunners hit .346 (40-12-81) as a team and outdug CCNY 41-26.
