WESTMINSTER, MD – The City College of New York baseball team wrapped up a three-game series at McDaniel on Sunday afternoon at Preston Field.
Stephen Peters (Cortlandt Manor, NY) hit his first home run of the year for the Beavers (1-8), but it was not enough, as the Green Terror (8-2) notched an 8-3 victory.
CCNY got on the board immediately, plating two runs in the top of the first.
Sean Riera (Miami, FL) singled and Peters doubled before
Josh Moreno (Portland, OR) knocked in both runners with a base hit down the right field line.
McDaniel tied it in the bottom of the third, then scored two more in the fourth to take the lead. Peters cut the Beavers' deficit in half when he led off the eighth with a solo shot to right. CCNY put the tying run on second after
Alex Erwin (Aliso Viejo, CA) doubled with two out, but he was left stranded and the Green Terror held on to a 4-3 advantage. McDaniel would increase that margin to 8-3 by putting up a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning. The Beavers went down in order in the ninth, as McDaniel finished off a series sweep.
Peters paced CCNY offensively, going 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored. Erwin was 3-for-4 with a double, while Riera had two hits and scored a run.
Parker Stemkowski (West Nyack, NY) (0-2) made the start on the mound and took the loss. He yielded four runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked three over five innings.
Richard Vento (Carle Place, NY) allowed four runs (three earned) and two hits while walking four over two innings before
Trent Alfred (Springfield Gardens, NY) finished up by retiring all three batters he faced.
For the Green Terror, Julian Jenkins went 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored. Isaiah Ishmail and Joey Hubinger both scored two runs, while T.J. McGuire tallied three RBIs. Nathan O'Brochta (2-0) earned the win after surrendering two runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out five. Jake Commens registered two strikeouts over two scoreless innings, and Brandon Richmond was charged with one run and two hits over 0.2 innings. Jordan Rhodes pitched a perfect 1.1 innings to record his third save of the season.
After playing seven straight games in the State of Maryland, the Beavers will play all but two of their remaining contests in New York. CCNY returns to action with a 4 p.m. matchup at Mount St. Mary (3-3) on Wednesday.
