Patchogue, NY – After a year-long hiatus due to the global pandemic, The City College of New York men's basketball program returned to the court Saturday evening, opening the 2021-22 season with a 67-60 victory over St. Joseph's College - Long Island. The win marks the first career victory for Interim Head Coach Spencer Boateng.
Junior Daniel Piszatowski led the Beavers with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Junior Dashaun Galloway made his debut for CCNY, finishing 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Sophomore Yassine Sakhi netted 13 points while tallying four rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore Amir Assani also made his debut for the Beavers, posting 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Freshman Elijah Patterson made the starting lineup in his first collegiate game, grabbing a team-high ten rebounds, along with five points and three steals in 31 minutes of action.
Freshman Bayame Bah ended the evening with four points, five rebounds, and dished a pair of assists.
After falling behind after the opening tip (4-0), a three-pointer by Piszatowski capped off a 10-2 run to put CCNY ahead 10-6 with 14:07 remaining in the period.
With time expiring in the half, a basket from Yassine handed a 30-25 advantage heading into halftime.
The Beavers and Golden Eagles traded baskets to start the second half. A run 9-0 run midway through the half helped give the Beavers a ten-point lead, 53-43, with 3:10 remaining. A pair of converted free throws late in the contest by Galloway (01:15) lifted the Beavers to their largest lead of the game, 58-46.
The Beavers held off St. Joe's to close out the game, pulling out a 67-60 win.
Next, the Beavers return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 10, on the road at William Patterson University at 7:00 p.m.
