JERSEY CITY, NJ – After dropping its season opener on Saturday, the City College of New York women's volleyball team returned to action with a matchup at New Jersey City University on Tuesday night. The Beavers (0-2) put forth a good effort, but fell to the Gothic Knights (3-0) by a 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 count at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.
The Gothic Knights jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first set before the Beavers won four of the next five points to pull within two, 9-7. After NJCU pushed its lead back to six points at 14-8, CCNY again responded, scoring three straight points to cut its deficit to 14-11. However, the Gothic Knights countered with an 8-3 spurt to bring the margin back to 22-14, and NJCU took the opening set by a score of 25-16.
In the second set, it was CCNY that jumped out to the early 7-3 cushion. The Gothic Knights rallied to go up 11-10 before a
Natalia Abreu (Bronx, NY) kill started a 3-0 CCNY run that put the Beavers back in front, 13-11. NJCU ended the set by scoring 14 of the final 16 points, however, and used a pair of service aces to close out the frame, 25-15.
NJCU took a 5-2 lead in the third set before a
Bianka Catral (Pomona, NY) ace capped a 3-0 CCNY run that pulled the Beavers even at 5-5. The Gothic Knights rattled off nine of the next 10 points, though, to open up a 14-6 advantage. NJCU won the set 25-11 to secure a 3-0 match victory.
Abreu
paced CCNY with four kills. She added three digs and two aces.
Viviana Alatorre (Bronx, NY) contributed three kills and three digs, and
Jafriesy Ovalle (Bronx, NY) notched a team-high six digs.
Anna Plotnick (Golden, CO), meanwhile, dished out 10 assists for the Beavers.
Rachael Pharo finished with 11 kills, eight digs and five aces for NJCU. Paoila Toledo tallied 10 kills, while Sydney Lore had 29 assists, seven digs and six aces. The Gothic Knights hit .366 (38 kills, 12 errors, 71 attempts) as a team and served a combined 14 aces. NJCU also held a 34-20 advantage in digs.
On Saturday, the Beavers play their first CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) multi-match of the season. CCNY (0-0 CUNYAC) will open its conference slate by taking on Lehman (0-0, 0-0 CUNYAC) and host Medgar Evers (0-0, 0-0 CUNYAC) at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn.
