Beavers Suffer Season-Opening Loss at Sarah Lawrence

YONKERS, NY – On Wednesday night, the City College of New York women's soccer team played its first game in nearly 22 months.  The Beavers, who took the field for the first time since the 2019 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championship Game, dropped their 2021 season opener, 2-0 to host Sarah Lawrence (1-1-0) at Fleming Field.

After a few early scoring chances by CCNY, Sarah Lawrence broke through for the game's first goal late in the first half.  Emma Floyd found the back of the net off a pass from Lily Matalus in the 44th minute, giving the Gryphons a 1-0 halftime lead.  Sarah Lawrence then doubled its advantage on Lynn Rech's tally in the 57th minute.

CCNY was unable to mount an offensive response, as the Gryphons held the Beavers without a shot over the final 40 minutes of the contest.  Overall, CCNY was outshot 15-6, including an 8-2 difference in shots on goal.

Maria Tomais (Cortlandt Manor, NY) (0-1-0), who began her CCNY career as a forward, played the entire game in net and recorded six saves.  Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper Maya Pfeiffer (1-1-0) was credited with a pair of saves in the victory.

The Beavers return to action on Saturday night, when they visit Delaware Valley (1-0-0) at 7 p.m.
