New York, NY - In their return to the Nat Holman Gymnasium on Friday evening, The City College of New York men's basketball team dropped a tight conference matchup against York College, 77-71. The Beavers fall to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in CUNYAC play.
Junior Dashaun Galloway led the Beavers with 15 points, ten assists, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Sophomore Yassine Sakhi finished with 14 points, three assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Junior Daniel Piszczatowski added 13 points, six rebounds, and a season-high four steals.
Sophomore Amir Assani recorded his fourth double-digit rebounding effort, pulling down 12 boards and totaling nine points, five assists, and three steals. Freshman Elijah Patterson netted a season-high 10 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field while grabbing seven rebounds and two assists. Freshman Luqman Ahmed played valuable minutes, knocking down 2-of-3 shots from long range to chip in six points for the Beavers off the bench.
CCNY started the game strong on the offensive end, shooting 48.57 % in the first half. A three-pointer by Ahmed capped off a 20-6 run midway through the half, boosting the Beavers to a 32-13 advantage with 8:09 remaining. The Beavers closed out the period, leading the Cardinal 41-24 at the half.
In the second half, the Cardinals came out with the hot hand, outscoring CCNY 16-6 to start the half, cutting the lead to single digits, 47-38. After pushing the lead margin to as much as 16, York continued to chip away at CCNY's lead and would breakthrough with a 19-8 run to take a one-point lead (59-58) with 7:54 left.
On three occasions, the Cardinals would grow their lead to seven points down the stretch. A three-pointer by Sakhi trimmed the lead to four points (75-71) with 57 seconds in regulation. A late foul call against the Beavers and converted free throws aided York to escape with the victory.
