CCNY Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Night; Strong Team Effort Falls Short at Home Against Hunter

New York, NY - In a hard-fought, standout team performance, The City College of York women's basketball team came up short against the Hunter College Hawks Tuesday night at home, 57-40. 

The Beavers fall to 0-16 and 0-12 in the CUNYAC.

Prior to the start of the game, interim head coach Tian Tang and the CCNY Athletics Department honored graduating senior guard Shanyah Lander as part of the program's Senior Night Ceremony.

Sophomore Monae Laing led the Beavers with her ninth double-double of the season. She finished with a season-high 23 points and matched her season-high total of 19 rebounds. Freshman Fatoumata Nantoume had seven points with two made field goals and five rebounds. Freshman Charlotte Foberg picked up 14 rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Leondra Craig dialed up six points and four rebounds. Nicole Magretta finished with two points, four rebounds, and two assists, while senior Shanyah Lander added two points and two rebounds in her final home game for the Beavers.

CCNY started the game strong, jumping out to a six-point lead (11-5) under five minutes (4:08) into the opening quarter. The Hawks responded to close the period out on a 6-0 run, evening the contest at 11-11.

Opening the second quarter, a three-pointer by Craig and back-to-back jumpers from Laing lifted the Beavers to a seven-point lead (18-11) over Hunter with 8:17 to go. After leading the contest by as much as seven points halfway through the quarter, Hunter closed out the half with an 11-o run, taking the lead heading into halftime, 24-11.

The Hawks extended their lead to nine points (32-23) in the third period. Trailing with 6:48 in the quarter, the Beavers sparked a 9-0 scoring run, tying the game at 32-32 to wrap the quarter.

Hunter controlled the final quarter of play, outscoring CCNY, 25-8, en-route to their 57-40 victory.

In all, the Beavers recorded a season-high 56 team rebounds.

Next, the Beavers will await their postseason opponent for the 2022 CUNYAC Championship Tournament.
