CCNY Baseball Seniors Go Out On Top, Beavers Sweep John Jay in Regular Season Finale

Bronx, NY - The City College of New York baseball team closed out the regular season in grand fashion on Saturday, earning a sweep over the John Jay College Bloodhounds on senior day at Ohio Field.

Before the start of game one, Head Coach Steve Macias and the CCNY Baseball program honored the program's graduating seniors, Angel Vega, Zach Boccio, and Sardar Khanbilvardi.

Game One: CCNY 6, John Jay 4
The Bloodhounds scored the first run in the first inning when Christopher Nunez reached home on Juan Maldonado's RBI fielders choice. 

CCNY evened the contest in the bottom of the first when Austin Ortiz knocked an RBI single through the left side, scoring Jonathan Rivera.

The Beavers took a one-run lead on John Creegan's RBI single in the second. 

John Jay answered back with another run of their own in the third frame. After Nunez singled to center field with no outs, a fielding error allowed Ivan Massari to reach home for the score. In the fourth, the Bloodhounds took advantage of another mishap by the Beavers as David Michalski reached home on a throwing error, recapturing the lead for John Jay, 3-2.

The Beavers tied the game again in the bottom of the fourth when Rivera slapped an RBI double to right field, plating Creegan. 

With two outs in the top of the fifth, John Jay regained the lead on Anthony Agosta's RBI double to take a 4-3 lead. 

With two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, Victor Murra Schott stepped up the moment and launched a pinch-hit three-RBI double to left field, lifting the Beavers to a 6-4 advantage. CCNY held off any runs in the final inning to secure the victory.

Freshman Jason Rodriguez earned his first collegiate win in relief, working the final 2.0 innings while only allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Freshman James Dean Johnstone started the game, tossing 4.0 innings on the mound, allowing four runs on two hits with three strikeouts. 

Game Two: CCNY 15, John Jay 5
CCNY got the scoring going when Michael Chasanov drove in John Creegan on RBI single to left-center.

The Bloodhounds responded with a pair of runs in the second frame. A fielding error led David Michalski to score the first run. Thomas Salerno reached home next on Ivan Massri's RBI ground-out, boosting the Bloodhounds to a 2-1 lead.

The Beavers answered in force, tallying four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the second. Creegan drove in the inning's first run on an RBI single to shortstop. Austin Ortiz followed next, burying a three-RBI home run to right field with one out, handing the Beavers a 5-2 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Bloodhound answered back with a home run of their own as Massri hit a three-RBI homer to right field, tying the game with five runs apiece. 

Ortiz gave the Beavers another spark in the bottom of the fourth, knocking an RBI double to left field, regaining the lead for the Beavers, 6-5. Later in the inning, with two outs and bases loaded, Angel Vega sent a three-RBI double to left-center, extending CCNY's lead to 9-5.

In the fifth, the Beavers added two more runs on Creegan and Ortiz's RBI singles, growing the Beaver's lead to 11-5.

Ethan Angress drove in a run on an RBI double down the left-field line in the sixth inning. Creegan followed next with an RBI double to third base before Ortiz blasted an RBI double to left field. Chasanov rounded out the scoring for the Beavers with an RBI double to center field en route to the Beaver's 15-5 victory.

Brandon Paider earned his second win of the season on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings in relief. He struck out five batters, allowing three runs on three hits and three errors. Josue Rodriguez earned the start, allowing two runs on one hit. Zach Boccio made an appearance, tossing the final inning.

Next, the CCNY baseball team will turn their attention toward the postseason after locking up the No. 2 in the 2022 CUNY Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament. The Beavers will host the No. 3 seed, John Jay on Wednesday, May 4, at Ohio Field in the Bronx, NY. The game time is still to be announced.
