New York, NY – The City College of New York men's soccer team opened CUNY Athletic conference play with a commanding 4–0 shutout victory over Medgar Evers on Wednesday afternoon at Randall's Island.
With the win, CCNY improves to 1-6-2 overall and 1–0 in conference play.
The Beavers controlled the pace from start to finish, outshooting the Cougars 27–2, including 18 shots on goal.
CCNY broke through in the 32nd minute when sophomore
Josue Lema capitalized on a pass from freshman
Mattia Gaspari to net the opening goal. Just three minutes later, freshman
Bitoshoke Chakma added to the tally with a composed finish, giving CCNY a 2–0 cushion at the break.
The momentum carried into the second half. In the 54th minute, sophomore
Yanis Hamdi Pacha extended the lead to 3–0 after a sharp assist from Lema. The Beavers sealed the win in the 87th minute, as sophomore
Konstantinos Psomaras slotted home the team's fourth goal to close out the scoring.
Offensively, Gaspari led the team with four shots, while Chakma, Hamdi Pacha, Lema, and Psomaras each found the back of the net.
On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper
Carlos Garcia turned away two shots to record the clean sheet, supported by a back line that limited Medgar Evers to minimal opportunities throughout the match.
Next, the Beavers will travel to take on Baruch College in league play on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Columbia University.
