NEWARK, N.J. – The City College of New York women's volleyball team officially opened its 2025 season on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match hosted by Rutgers-Newark. The Beavers dropped their opening match to Albright College by a 3–1 decision, and fell to Rutgers-Newark in the closer in straight sets.
In the opener against Albright, graduate student Gia Skenderi led CCNY's attack with a match-high 14 kills, while adding nine digs, six assists, and 19 total points. Junior Fatimah Coppin turned in a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Ivanna Zamora Sanchez hit a strong .417, finishing with five kills and seven points. Freshman setter Danuzia Caixeta Palmer guided the offense with 33 assists and added two service aces. Defensively, libero junior Rosalynda Russo collected a team-best 19 digs.
Later in the day, CCNY closed out tri-match play against Rutgers-Newark. Skenderi again led the Beavers with seven kills, while Coppin added five kills and seven digs. Caixeta Palmer dished out 13 assists and served three aces, while Russo anchored the back row with 13 digs. Middle blockers Serena Warner and Jia Liu Hua provided defensive presence at the net, combining for three blocks.
Next, CCNY returns to action on Thursday, September 11, traveling to face Maritime College at 7:00 p.m. in Throggs Neck, N.Y.
