Dunmore, PA - The City College of New York baseball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Penn State Scranton on Sunday afternoon. The Beavers fell 11–8 in the opener before dropping game two, 9–2.
Game One | Penn State Scranton 11, CCNY 8
In game one, CCNY jumped out to a strong start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI single from Demetri Zirogiannis drove in John Spallin before a balk allowed Rich Cirigliano to score. Gerard Molinaro added another RBI single later in the inning to give the Beavers an early 3–0 lead.
Penn State Scranton responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but CCNY extended its lead in the second. Zirogiannis delivered a two-run double to score Jason Roser and Tyler Persampire, and Molinaro followed with another RBI single to make it 6–2.
The hosts cut the deficit to 6–4 in the second before the Beavers added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Zirogiannis to take a 7–4 advantage. However, Penn State Scranton turned the game around in the bottom of the fourth when Jake Sullivan blasted a grand slam to give the home team its first lead at 8–7. The Nittany Lions added three more runs over the next two innings to extend the lead to 11–7.
CCNY plated one final run in the seventh when Jason Roser grounded out to score Persampire, but the comeback attempt fell short.
Persampire led the Beavers with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate and scored twice. Molinaro finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Zirogiannis went 2-for-2 with a double and four RBIs.
Game Two | Penn State Scranton 9, CCNY 2
In game two, Penn State Scranton once again struck first, using a two-run home run by Guy Mushow in the second inning to take the early lead.
CCNY answered in the fourth inning when James Anderson drove in Rich Cirigliano with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2–1. The Nittany Lions responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Martino Tobasco and an RBI triple from Keegan Litts to push the lead to 4–1.
Penn State Scranton broke the game open with three runs in the fifth, including an RBI single from Jake Sullivan and another RBI hit from Tobasco, extending the lead to 7–1.
The Beavers added their final run in the sixth when Gerard Molinaro singled to score John Spallin, but the hosts answered again with a sacrifice fly from Isaiah Alicea and another run that scored on a fielding error to seal the 9–2 victory.
Spallin paced CCNY with two hits in game two, while Molinaro and Anderson each recorded an RBI.
Next, the Beavers travel to take on Drew University on Thursday, March 19, at 3:30pm in Madison, NJ.
