Old Westbury, NY — The City College of New York baseball team erased an early deficit with a pair of big innings to defeat Old Westbury, 11–8, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
CCNY (3–11) pounded out 13 hits and scored in four different innings, highlighted by a four-run fourth and a three-run sixth to seize control of the game.
Old Westbury (6–10) jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the first inning and adding two more in the third to build a 4–0 advantage.
The Beavers responded in the fourth inning. freshman Tyler Persampire delivered a two-run single to bring CCNY within two before junior Jake Brenner followed with a two-run double that tied the game at 4–4.
Old Westbury briefly regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly and a solo home run, but CCNY answered again in the fifth. Persampire struck again with a two-run double to even the score, and senior Erik Rank added an RBI single to give the Beavers their first lead of the afternoon, 7–6.
CCNY broke the game open in the sixth inning when senior John Spallin launched a three-run home run to left field, extending the Beavers' advantage to 10–6.
Old Westbury cut the deficit to two runs with a pair of scores in the sixth, but CCNY added an insurance run in the seventh on Brenner's RBI single to make it 11–8.
Persampire led the Beavers offensively, going 2-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Brenner finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Spallin added a three-run homer and scored twice. Gerard Molinaro and Jason Roser each collected two hits as part of CCNY's 13-hit attack.
On the mound, freshman Paul Cucuzzo (1–0) earned the win in relief. senior Erik Rank closed the game with 1.1 scoreless innings to secure the victory.
CCNY will look to carry the momentum into its next contest as the Beavers continue their road swing.
