Spencer Boateng enters his third season as the head coach of The City College of New York men's basketball program in 2023-24.
In his second season, Boateng ushered a resurgence of the CCNY men's basketball program, turning in one of the best and most exciting seasons in recent history. The Beavers finished the 2022-23 season with a 17-10 overall record. The win total is the program's highest since the 2016-17 season and ties for the third-most wins in program history. The Beavers reached the semifinals of the CUNYAC Championship Tournament after defeating John Jay in the First Round, earning the program's first postseason victory since 2017.
With their success on the hardwood, Boateng was named the 2022-23 CUNY Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Junior Yassine Sakhi earned First Team CUNYAC All-Conference honors, while senior Dashuan Galloway was selected as a Second-Team All-Conference selection. Sakhi was also named a Second Team All-Met Honoree by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.
In the class, the Beavers had five players named to the 2022-23 CUNYAC Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll after boosting a 3.2 GPA or higher. The program also earned NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for the second straight year, aching a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, while six student-athletes earned placement on the NABC Academic Honors Court. Amir Assani was named to the College Sports Communicators, Academic All-District Team and an Honorable Mention CUNYÂ Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
During the 2021-22 campaign, Boateng guided the Beavers to a 7-17 overall record, their best finish in four seasons, leading the team to their first postseason appearance since 2017. Two Beavers earned postseason recognition, with Yassine Sakhi earning CUNYAC Second-Team All-Conference honors, while Dashaun Galloway was selected to the league's All-Sportsmanship Team.Â
Off the court, the program had a successful year in the classroom, receiving the 2021-22 NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, while five players were named to the association's Honors Court, garnering a 3.2 or higher. In addition, the men's basketball program had five student-athletes named to the 2021-22 CUNYAC Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
In his first season at CCNY, his primary duties were on and off-court player development, scouting, game planning, and recruiting. That season, CCNY's Yassine Sakhi was named the CUNYAC and D3hoops.com Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year.
Before CCNY, Boateng spent one season at Manhattanville College as an assistant coach, helping lead the Valiants to an 11-14 overall record. With the Valiants, he helped lead recruiting efforts and on-court development. Boateng was also instrumental in the development of Sean Smith, who was named the 2018-19 MAC Freedom Player of the Year and earned All-Atlantic, ECAC, and NABC postseason honors.
Boateng is the founder and director of the AAU travel program, We Got Next, based out of New York City. Additionally, he has coached in numerous camps and clinics throughout the New York Metro area.Â
Boateng graduated from Iona College in 2016, earning a degree in Business Management. At Iona, he served as a team manager for the men's basketball program before making the team as a walk-on in 2012-13. With the Gaels, he was part of the team that won a MAAC championship in 2013 and earned an NCAA tournament berth.
Boateng played at Salesian High School, winning back-to-back CHSAA City Championships (2010-11) and the 2011 CHSAA State Championship. Later, as an assistant coach of the varsity boys team, he helped lead Salesian to a CHSAA State Championship in 2016.
Boateng resides in Edgewater, NJ, with his wife, Erica.
