City College of New York women's volleyball team dropped both matches during the CCNY Tri-match hosted in Nat Holman Gymnasium. First the Beavers fell in three sets 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-10) to William Paterson, followed by falling 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-17) to King's College (PA).
Match Two (King's College)King's College (17-6) had just defeated William Paterson and took their momentum into the first set. The match started off tied 3-3, but after a timeout the Lions went up by two. They continued to run away with the score by going up 15-7. King's College took the first set 25-12.
To start the second set, the Lions went on a 5-0 run. It was an advantage that CCNY (4-19) could not stop. The Beavers gave all their strength but fell in the second set 25-10.
The third set had a lot of back-and-forth action. CCNY was down 11-16, but managed to dominate and go on a 6-0 run to take a 17-16 lead. However, the Lions broke that run by going on their own run which led them to taking the third set and match 25-17.
Yasmine Bachtarzi led the Beavers with eight kills, while Ubanwa added six.
Magd Zamzam dished out 16 assists.
Irishvarsha Iyyadurai led the team with 11 digs, while Ubanwa tallied 10.
Match One (vs. William Paterson)The Beavers (4-18) came into the match longing for a victory. William Paterson (10-9) had different plans for the Beavers though. The Pioneers quickly took control of the first set. While City continued to fight, Wiliam Paterson continued to dominate and took the first set 25-7.
There was a lot of back-and-forth action in the second set before William Paterson took a 6-4 advantage. They continued their dominance and went up 10-4 before City took a timeout. While, City took the next point, the Pioneers would not give up their lead. William Paterson took the second set 25-11.
The third set began as the second set did with back-and-forth action between the two teams. CCNY was down 6-4, but looked to make a quick comeback. William Paterson, however, went on a 6-0 run to give themselves a 12-4 advantage. After receiving one point, the Pioneers took another 6-0 run for a 19-5 advantage. The Pioneers took the third set 25-10.
Angela Ubanwa led the Beavers with five kills, while
Brigitte Bozer added four.
Magd Zamzam led the team with six digs along with four assists.
Pui-Yan Yu put up two big blocks during the match.
Up next for the Beavers will be the CUNYAC Multi-match on Monday, October 12. City will face York College (1 p.m.) and then Brooklyn College (3 p.m.). Both matches will be played at Brooklyn.
