Women's Volleyball Splits At CUNYAC Multi-Match

The City College of New York women's volleyball team was at the CUNYAC Multi-match hosted by Brooklyn College. First the fell in a heart breaking five-set loss 2-3 (20-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-19, 9-15) to York College. Then they picked up a five-set victory 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 12-25, 15-13) against Brooklyn College.

Match One (vs. York)
The Beavers (5-20, 2-3 CUNYAC) and York (4-15, 2-4 CUNYAC) both fought hard for a conference victory. The first set maintained a lot of back-and-forth action as the conference foes looked for a victory on neutral ground. The Cardinals took the advantage and continued to run away with the first set. York won 25-20 in the first set.

Using the momentum from the first set, the Cardinals quickly took off on a mission for a victory in the second set. While CCNY fought hard, they were unable to stop York as they took the second set 25-16.

With a fight in them to pick up another conference victory, City pushed for an advantage over York. While the set involved a lot of back-and-forth action, CCNY was able to get an advantage. By a slim margin, City took the third set 25-22. 

York led 2-1 going into the fourth set, but the Beavers were not about to let that distract them from a victory. City quickly took an advantage that the Cardinals were unable to catch up to. CCNY took the fourth set 25-19 and tied the match 2-2.

With it being the final set, both teams fought for the prized conference victory. York took a quick advantage and was able to get to the magic number 15 first. The Cardinals took the fifth set and match with the 15-9 win.

Angela Ubanwa and Camila Diaz led the Beavers with eight kills, while Yasmine Bachtarzi added five. Magd Zamzam dished out 23 assists. Brigitte Bozer tallied five service aces out of the teams 17. Veralucia Quispe had 15 digs during the match. 

Match Two (vs. Brooklyn)
The Beavers (5-20, 2-3 CUNYAC) started the first set off on a mission to obtain a conference victory. With all of the student-athletes working together they maintained an advantage they had been lacking in the first match. While Brooklyn (6-13, 3-3 CUNYAC) also searched for a victory, they kept the first set close. However, CCNY was able to pull out a 25-23 victory in the first set.

To start the second set, the Bulldogs pulled away quickly. Both teams continued to fight for a victory, but Brooklyn maintained their advantage. the Beavers were unable to get their momentum from the first set back as the Bulldogs took the second set 25-18.

The third set was a mirrored version of the second set where City pulled away quickly. The team was able to get their momentum back and held off the Bulldogs to take the third set 25-17.

City, only needing one more set victory to take the match fought hard in the fourth set. However, Brooklyn wanted to force a fifth set and quickly took hold of the upper hand in the set. The Bulldogs continued to domiante throughout the set and took a 25-12 victory.

All tied up, the fifth set was a series of back-and-forth between the conference foes. CCNY was able to take a lead that the Bulldogs were unable to catch. WIth that simple upperhand, CCNY took the fifth set and the match 15-13.

Ubanwa notched her second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs. Zamzam dished out a team-high 15 assists. Quispe had a team-high 20 digs, while Irishvarsha Iyyadurai added 16. The team picked up seven service aces along with three blocks in the victory.

The team will travel to Elmira, New York to take part in the Elmira Tournament on October 16 and 17. The Beavers will face Wilkes Universtiy and SUNY Canton on Friday followed by Uitca and Elmira on Saturday.
