Box Score 4 The City College of New York women's volleyball team fell in the first two matches of the Elmira Tournament. First, the Beavers fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-12) to Wilkes, and then fell 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-18) to SUNY Canton. On day two, City fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-10) to Utica College. They then fell to tournament host, Elmira, 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-20).
Day TwoMatch Two (vs. Elmira)The Beavers came into their final match searching for a victory at the Elmira Tournament. Tournament host, Elmira, had other plans though. The Soaring Eagles quickly took the advantage in the first set. As both teams continued to battle back and forth for control, Elmira was able to reamin dominat over the Beavers. Elmira took the first set 25-11.
Coming off the first set victory, the Soaring Eagles, took control in the second set. CCNY was able to put up some points and bring it within a couple points, but Elmira continued their dominance. Elmira took the second set 25-10.
City wanted a victory before heading back home. The third set had a lot of back-and-forth action between the two teams. The Beavers continued to look for opportunites to take the advantage. The Soaring Eagles got a slight advantage that ended up giving them the third set and the match, 25-20.
Ubanwa led the Beavers with four kills, while Zamzam and
Brigitte Bozer added three a piece. Zamzam dished out all 13 assists for City, while she also tallied four service aces. Quispe notched five digs in the match.
Match One (vs. Utica)Utica started the match with a quick lead. This was a lead the Beavers were unable to overcome. City continued to chip away at the lead, but Utica could not be stopped as they took the first set 25-13.
Utica continued their dominance from the first set. City went into the second set strong, but Utica was able to put up big stops. Utica took the second set 25-11.
With one set from victory, Utica controlled the third set. The Beavers put up big points to slow down Utica but was unable to get the stops they needed to gain an advantage. Utica took the third set and the match 25-10.
Ubanwa led the Beavers with five kills.
Magd Zamzam dished out all nine assists for the Beavers.
Vera Quispe tallied eight digs, while
Irishvarsha Iyyadurai added seven.
Day One
Match Two (vs. SUNY Canton)Canton (18-7) quickly took the lead in the first set of the match. City (5-22) was able to gain some momentum, but the Kangaroos continued to add to their lead. The Kangaroos took the first set 25-8.
CCNY was able to gain some momentum in the second set. SUNY Canton would not give up their lead and continued to rack up points. While the Beavers continued to fight and stop the Kangaroos they fell in the second set 25-11.
With the strength from winning the first two sets, the Kangaroos quickly jumped out to a lead in the third set. City put up a solid effort hoping to force a fourth set. The Beavers had a .053 attack percentage, but was unable to overcome the Kangaroos .143 attack percentage. Canton took the third set and match 25-18.
Angela Ubanwa led the Beavers with five of their eight kills.
Magd Zamzam dished out seven assists, while
Irishvarsha Iyyadurai led the team with five digs.
Match One (vs. Wilkes)The Beavers (5-21) started the first set hoping for a victory to start off their four matches at the Elmira Tournament. Wilkes (12-14) was able to take the advantage and hold onto it. CCNY would not give up, but Wilkes took the first set 25-16.
Using the momentum from the first set, the Colonels quickly took the lead. City continued to fight but was unable to slow down Wilkes. The Colonels took the second set 25-10.
Continuing with the strength from their first two sets, Wilkes was able to gain the advantage over City. With CCNY hoping to force a fourth set, they fought for an advantage. The Colonels took the third set and match 25-12.
Ubanwa led the Beavers with five kills, while
Yasmine Bachtarzi and Zamzam added three kills. Zamzam dished out nine assists. Veralucia Quispe tallied nine digs along with Ubanwa's eight.
The Beavers will face Farmingdale State on Tuesday, October 20 at 7 p.m. The match will be played at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
