The City College of New York split matches at the NJCU Tri-match hosted by New Jersey City University in Jersey City, New Jersey. First they swept Purchase College 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-12). Then, City fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-12) to host NJCU.
Match Two (vs. NJCU)The Beavers (4-17) looked to pick up another victory in their second match at the NJCU tri-match. New Jersey City University (8-7) put up a big fight for a win. In the first set the Gotham Knights took a quick advantage that CCNY was unable to come back from. NJCU took the first set 25-13.
The second set was a battle between the two teams. City continued to look for a competitive advantage against the host team. While, it looked like they might be able to take the second set, NJCU quickly took control and took the second set 25-18.
Needing to win this set, the Beavers looked to take control. However, the Gotham Knights continued with their strength from the first two sets. NJCU took the third set and the match 25-12.
Brigitte Bozer led the Beavers with eight kills, while
Angela Ubanwa added six.
Magd Zamzam dished out nine assists, along with
Cassidy Iannariello adding three.
Vera Quispe tallied 15 digs, while the team had 37.
Match One (vs. Purchse College)The Beavers (4-16) began the match looking for a victory against Purchase (0-12). In the first set, it was a lot of back-and-forth action between the two teams. City was able to hold an advantage and took the first set 25-21.
The second set was a battle between the two teams. They both fought for an advantage over the other. It was close, but CCNY was not going to let Purchase take the victory. The Beavers dug down deep and pulled out a 29-27 second set victory.
Knowing they only had to win one more set, the Beavers took control in the third set. They would not let Purchase take the advantage they had fought so hard to maintain. CCNY took the third set and the match with a 25-12 victory.
Angela Ubanwa led the Beavers with 14 kills on a .379 attack percentage. Zamzam dished out 25 assists. Quispe tallied seven digs, while the team had 25. The team racked up 17 service aces in the victory.
The women's volleyball team will return home Saturday, October 10 for a CCNY Tri-match. They will first face William Paterson University at 11 a.m., followed by King's College (PA) at 3 p.m. Both matches will take place at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
