The City College of New York men's basketball team uses a second half surge to move onto the championship game at the 34th Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg. City (2-0) defeated Muhlenberg (1-2) 73-66 to move on to the championship game. This is the first year since 1995 that Muhlenberg has not advanced to the championship. In the championship game, City fell 82-71 to Hartwick.
Day Two - Championship game (vs. Hartwick)Hatwick (2-1) started off the championship game quickly. City (2-1) came into the game with the momentum of halting the hosts, Muhlenberg, from making the championship game in 20 years. The first half looked good for the Beavers, but they were unable to may any advance on the dominating Hawks.
CCNY shot .385 from the field in the first half, but it was not enough as Hartwick went into halftime with a 40-36 lead.
The Beavers were hoping to make a second half surge like they did against Muhlenberg. The Hawks continued to dominate, but City took their largest lead of the game at the 15:28 mark. Hoping to maintain the lead the Beavers fought hard, but the Hawks quickly took their lead back.
The remainder of the second half consisted of both teams going back-and-forth with possession, but City was unable to take control of the game. Hartwick took the 34th Scotty Wood Championship 82-71.
Mark Richards led the Beavers with 21 points, while
Will Rhodes and
Khalil Hamer both added 18. Rhodes led the team with nine rebounds, while the team tallied 40 rebounds.
Day One (vs. Muhlenberg)City started the game with a quick lead, but Muhlenberg was close behind. The Mules took control half way through the first half and there was nothing CCNY could do to slow them down. While the Mules were putting up points, City continued to put up points of their own to keep the game close.
Going into halftime, Muhlenberg led 42-36.
City knew they needed a quick surge to push them over the Mules into the championship game. Muhlenberg knew all they needed to do was maintain their lead and they would face Hartwick in the championship. It was not until three minutes remained in the game that Muhlenberg had something to worry about. City took the lead and control of the game with only three minutes remaining.
The Beavers fought hard to maintain their lead and cause turnovers from the Mules to punch their ticket to the championship.
Khalil Hamer led the team with 32 points, while
Mark Richards added 20. Both Hamer and Richards recorded eight rebounds in the victory. City shot .439 from the floor, while holding their opponents to a .417 shooting percentage
City will face Brooklyn in their first conference matchup of the season on Tuesday, November 24 at 7 p.m. The game will take place at Nat Holman Gymnasium
