Tough Start Leads to Victory for Women's Volleyball

The City Collge of New York women's volleyball team picked up their first victory at the end of the multi-match at Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, New York. In their first conference match of the season, they fell in three sets(25-12, 25-10, 25-7)  to Hunter. Then dropped 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-17) to Lehman. The last match of the day they defeated non-conference opponent Albertus Magnus 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24)

Match Three (CCNY vs. Albertus Magnus):
CCNY came out as strong as they continued their search for a victory. It was a long first set and the two teams battled back-and-forth for the lead. With the power on them, the Beavers took the first set 25-22.

The second set looked to be in favor of Albertus Magnus as they started on a 3-0 run. It turned out to be the downfall for the Beavers, and they fell in the second set 25-19.

The third set looked very similar to the first set as both teams battled back-and-forth point-for-point. Behind theserving of #24 Brigitte Bozer CCNY tied the match 21-21. After that point, City knew they had grabbed the third set and went up 2-1 with a 25-22 victory.

With the match on the line, the Beavers attacked the fourth set as they had all day. The Falcons would not give up though as they tested CCNY for a victory of their own. The Beavers would not back down and continued to dominate on the court. They took the fourth set and the match on a 26-24 victory.

Angela Ubanwa led the Beavers with nine kills. The team tallied 32 in the victory. Magd Zamzam notched a double-double with 10 digs and 13 assists. Veralucia Quispe put up a team-high 22 digs, while Brigitte Bozer added 10.

Match Two (CCNY vs. Lehman):
The Beavers came out strong for the match against Lehman (4-3, 1-0 CUNYAC). City took off on a 4-0 run to start off the first set. This set the team up for the rest of the first set. Lehman tried to catch up, but was unable to overcome the deficit and the Beavers took the first set 25-21.

After the win in the first set, the Beavers were hungry for more. CCNY came out strong, but Lehman was looking for their first conference victory. Lehman took over and was able to take the second set 25-18.

With the match tied 1-1, both teams looked to gain the competitive advantage in the third set. The Lightning continued their dominace from the second set and went up 2-1 when they took the third set 25-21.

Trying to get to a fifth set the Beavers gave everything they had in the fourth set. However, Lehman took over with Salveria Gonzalez behind the serve. The Lightning took the fourth set and the match 25-17.

Match One (CCNY vs. Hunter):
The Beavers took on Hunter (1-2, 1-0 CUNYAC)  for the first conference match of the season. The match began the CUNYAC multi-match taking place at Nat Holman Gymnasium. City fought for a win in the first set, but Hunter was able to put an advantage over CCNY and took the first set 25-12.

The second and third set were hard fought battles for the Beavers, but the Hawks continued to dominate on the floor. They took the second and third set 25-10 and 25-7, respectively to win their first match of the season.

The team tallied eight kills along with 20 digs. Between our two setters, Cassidy Iannariello and Magd Zamzam, they dished out seven assists.

CCNY will travel to Medgar Evers on Tuesday, September 15 for their first road conference match of the season. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
