The City College of New York women's volleyball team defeated Sarah Lawrence 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-21) Tuesday night at Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, New York.
The first set started off back-and-forth between the two teams. Sarah Lawrence (1-9) went up 5-9, but the Beavers (3-11) would not go quietly.
Irishvarsha Iyyadurai took control with serves and City went on a 7-0 to take a 13-9 lead. The Beavers continued to dominate the Gryphons and took the first set 25-16.
City and Sarah Lawrence started off the second set the same way the first set started. The set was tied 4-4, but not for long. Behind
Brigitte Bozer serving, City went up 11-4 before Sarah Lawrence took a time out. CCNY continued to dominate in the second set and took the set 25-11.
With a gleaming shimmer of light for a victory, the Beavers pushed forward in the third set, but the Gryphons would not go quietly. Sarah Lawrence started the set on a 4-0 run. CCNY quickly tied it 4-4 and then took the lead. It was a back-and-forth set until City took the 22-21 lead. That sealed the deal for a City College of New York victory as they took the third set 25-21.
Aida Cekic led the Beavers with eight kills, along with Bozer adding six. Veralucia Quispe notched 10 digs, while
Cassidy Iannariello dished out a team-high eight assists. The team tallied 20 service aces in the victory, with Cekic leading the team with seven.
The Beavers are traveling to the Lycoming Tip-Off Classic Friday September 25 and Saturday September 26 in Williamsport, Pennslyvannia. They will face tournament host, Lycoming, on Friday at 4 p.m. followed by Misericordia at 6 p.m. On Saturday they will take on Alfred State at 10 a.m. and Wilkes University at 12 p.m.
