The City College of New York women's volleyball team fell in a hearbreaking five sets (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 8-15) to Summit University on Tuesday night at Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, New York.
The Beavers (0-6) started off the match strong, looking for their first win. With
Brigitte Bozer serving City came out and got some big points against Summit (1-4). CCNY went on an 11-1 run to take the lead and then took the first set 25-17.
When the second set started, it looked like the Lady Defenders would take the lead, but one the Beavers took the lead at the 16-15 mark they made their name. City continued to dominate in the secocnd set and won 25-23.
The third set contained a lot of back and forth action between the two squads. The Lady Defenders were able to gain the advantage and took the third set 25-21.
Summit went off on a 6-0 run to start the fourth set that the Beavers were not able to catch up. Throughout the whole set the Beavers were just a step behind, and watched as the Lady Defenders took the fourth set 25-17.
With both teams looking for their first victory of the season, Summit took the first advantage in the fifth set with a 4-0 run. The Beavers came back and made it 4-3, but the Lady Defenders were just a step ahead and took the fifth set and the match with a 15-8 win.
Angela Ubanwa notched her first double-double of the season with 16 kills anbd 14 digs.
Cassidy Iannariello was just shy of a double-double with 23 assists and nine digs.
Veralucia Quispe dished out a team-high 22 digs, while
Brigitte Bozer added 10.
The Beavers host a multi-match on Saturday, September 12 with City taking on three opponents, with the first starting at 9 a.m.
