City College of New York men's basketball held off York College 76-71 on Friday evening in Nat Holman Gymnasium.
York (6-13, 3-7 CUNYAC) started the game off on a 6-0 run, but City (10-8, 5-5 CUNYAC) was not far behind. CCNY continued to chip away at the lead and eventually took it when they went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-14 lead. The Beavers then continued to run up the score and put up big stops against the Cardinals. City remained in control for the remainder of the half and went up 39-27 going into the locker room.
City shot 41.9 percent from the field, while York shot 33.3 percent from the field.
Khalil Hamer led the Beavers with 11 points. Hamer and
Robbie Dionisio led with five rebounds a piece.
York came out strong in the second half as they searched for another conference victory, but City would not let that lead go. The Cardinals chipped away at the lead slowly and made some big stops, but it was the Beavers game. The score was only tied twice, while the lead only changed the one time during the first half. The Beavers were outscored 44-37 in the second half, but they were able to hold off the Cardinals for the 76-71 victory.
Mark Richards led the Beavers with 22 points, while Dionisio added 15 and Hamer had 11. Dionisio led with nine rebounds, while Richards recorded eight. The Beavers shot an impressive 49.1 percent from the field on the game, while holding York to a 38.8 field goal percentage.
City will travel to face Hunter on Wednesday, January 27 at 7 p.m.
