The City College of New York baseball team opened its 2016 campaign with a double-header at North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. CCNY fell in both games to the 6-0 North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops. In the first game, City fell 11-0 and then fell 13-2 in the second game.
Game TwoMichael Siklas started game-two off with a base hit to left center. He would be left stranded as the Beavers tried to get things going early. It would be a big first inning for the Battling Bishops. Coming off of six hits, N.C. Wesleyan took a big 6-0 lead.
With four hits in the bottom of the second, the Battling Bishops added three more runs for a 9-0 lead.
The Beavers got on the board in the fourth inning starting when
Sadar Khanbilvardi reached first base after being hit by a pitch. Khanbilvardi advanced to second when
Uche Nwokelo was also hit by a pitch. Franco Alberto Jr. brought Khanbilvardi in and advanced Nwokelo to second with a single to right center.
Ariel Xavier Torres brought in Nwokelo who had advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Torres got power off his swing and singled to center field.
The Battling Bishops added one more run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 10-2 as the teams headed into the fifth.
In the final three innings, CCNY would be held to just one hit, while N.C. Wesleyan tallied three more runs to take the game 13-2.
Cal Romano pitched two innings for the Beavers and struck out one. He gave up 10 hits and nine runs, seven of which were earned in his two innings pitched.
Joseph DeCarlo pitched the next four innings for City gave up four runs off of four hits, three of the runs were earned. He struck out four in the four innings.
Game OneNorth Carolina Wesleyan opened the scoring with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first. In the third, the Battling Bishops extended their lead with four runs coming off of four hits.
City was held hit-less through four innings. In the bottom of the fourth, North Carolina Wesleyan scored three more runs to take a 9-0 lead.
CCNY had some trouble getting the bats going. It was just Franco Alberto Jr. and
Brendan Murphy who were able to get a hit off of North Carolina Wesleyan pitcher, T.J. Wilke. Wilke recorded 10 strikeouts in the victory for the Battling Bishops.
The Battling Bishops added a run in both the fifth and sixth inning to finish the game with a 11-0 victory.
Sacha Urbach pitched 3.1 innings for the Beavers. He struck out two while he gave up eight hits and nine runs, eight of which were earned.
Anthony Sautter pitched 1.2 innings and walked four. Sautter struck out one and gave up one earned run.
CCNY will travel to Newport News, Virginia for a double-headed at Christopher Newport University. First, the Beavers will face Rutgers-Newark at 11 a.m. followed by a matchup against CNU.
