The City College of New York baseball team was defeated by both Rutgers-Newark and Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, Virginia. First, the Beavers fell 8-5 to Rutgers-Newark, then was topped 18-1 by CNU.
Game Two (vs. Christopher Newport)It would be CNU that struck first in the non-conference match-up. Christopher Newport scored one run in the first to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Captains would add one more run to the lead in the second inning.
City was held to just one hit in the first three innings. The Captains added to their lead when they scored four runs in the third inning. With a 6-0 lead the Beavers knew they needed to get the bats swinging. The Beavers struggled to get their offense started and CNU just continued to add runs.
Christopher Newport added a run or more in every inning. It was not until the eighth inning that the Beavers got on the board.
Adrian Pena hit the third home-run of the season for CCNY to put City on the board.
With CNU scoring runs in every inning, the game would finish with the Captains up 18-1.
Jeffrey Diaz pitched four innings for the Beavers and gave up sevens runs off of six hits, four of which were earned. He struck out four and walked four in those four innings.
Cal Romano came in for 1.1 innings and gave up four runs off of four hits.
Matt Sola-Baker came in to finish the sixth inning and gave up two runs off of three hits, where he also recorded one strikeout.
Eric Giglio pitched the seventh inning and gave up one run.
Ariel Xavier Torres came in to pitch the eighth inning. He finished 3H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB.
Game One (vs. Rutgers-Newark)The Beavers got it started early as
Sadar Khanbilvardi hit the first CCNY home-run of the year. After the first inning CCNY led 1-0.
Rutgers-Newark earned two runs in the second, both of which were unearned and went up 2-1 early in the second inning.
The Scarlet Raiders scored one run off of three hits in the third inning, but the Beavers responded.
Eric Giglio singled and then advanced to second on an error. He then advanced to third off of a bunt from
Elmy Antonio.
Michael Siklas then singled to bring Giglio in for the Beavers. The Scarlet Raiders led 3-2 after three innings.
Rutgers-Newark added a run in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 5-2 lead. The Beavers were unable to get the bats going in the next couple of innings.
In the ninth inning, the Scarlet Raiders scored three runs off of three hits to take a 8-2 lead. However, the Beavers responded in the bottom of the ninth. After Siklas was walked, Khanbilvardi doubled which put Silkas at third base. With a sacrifice fly from
Adrian Pena he brought in Siklas.
Uche Nwokelo hit the second home-run for the Beavers to bring in two runs. Unfortunately, the Beavers ran out of time and fell 8-5.
Anthony Cacchione pitched seven innings for the Beavers and gave up five runs off of nine hits. Only two of those runs were earned. Cacchione recorded four strikeouts for City.
Anthony Sautter came in for 1.1 innings and gave up three runs, all of which were earned, off of four hits.
Matt Sola-Baker threw the final 0.2 innings for the Beavers.
City will face SUNY Maritime in a double-header for their first home game of the season. The game will take place on Saturday, February 27 at 12 p.m.
