Maritime Defeats Baseball in Doubleheader

The City College of New York baseball team fell in both games of the doubleheader against non-conference opponent Maritime on Saturday afternoon. Maritime took the first game 8-2 and then the second game 4-2.

Game One
The Privateers struck first in the top of the first inning. Starting the game off with a single, Kevin Monahan was able to get around the bases to put up the first run of the game. It would be Chris Deddo who reached on a hit-by-pitch that would put up the second run for Maritime.

The Privateers picked up another run in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Adrian Pena got the bats swinging for the Beavers in the second inning. He would lead off the inning with a single to left field and then stole second base to put himself into scoring position. Uche Nwokelo followed Pena with a double down the left field line to bring Pena in for the first run for CCNY. Alberto Franco singled through the right side and brought in Nwokelo to tie the score 3-2.

Maritime earned one more run in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Maritime kept their bats swinging as they recorded four more runs for an 8-2 final score.

Pena led the way for the Beavers and tallied three hits off of three at bats. Sacha Urbach pitched 6.0 innings pitched for City. He recorded six strikeouts, nine hits, eight runs, four of which were earned. Lorenzo Hiraldo came in to pitch to seventh inning and gave up one hit.

Game Two
Maritime got things going again in the first inning as Delgado singled. He was able to get himself into scoring position and was able to help the Privateers take a 1-0 lead.
It looked like the Beavers might get the bats going in the first when Ariel Xavier Torres doubled and put himself into scoring position. Unfortunately, he would be left on base. Anthony Cacchione pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the second and hoped the Beavers could get him some run support.

Sadar Khanbilvardi and Joseph DeCarlo both recorded hits in the second inning but was unable to get around to put the Beavers on the board.

The third inning looked similar for City as Michael Siklas singled and then stole second base to put himself in scoring position. Adrian Pena came up as sent a shot deep into center field that scored Siklas and put him on third base. Pena would be left on third, but not before the Beavers would tie the score 1-1.

CCNY was able to take the lead in the fourth inning. Victor Vargas singled as he got things started for the Beavers. He was able to reach third with the help of DeCarlo and Eric Giglio with a big single into center field was able to bring him in for City to take a 2-1 lead.

The Privateers used a big sixth inning to take the lead back. Maritime picked up three runs off of three hits to take a 4-2 lead.

The Beavers were unable to get the bats going in the sixth and seventh inning and Maritime took the second game 4-2.

Cacchione pitched a complete game for the Beavers. He gave up seven hits, four runs, only two were earned. He recorded seven strikeouts in his outing.

The Beavers will travel to face Wesley College Sunday, February 28 for a doubleheader.
