The City College of New York baseball team fell short in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday against Purchase College. City first fell 1-0 followed by a 7-5 loss.
Game OneThe first game was a pure pitchers duel. Purchase got their first hit of the game in the second inning, and City followed with one in the third, but neither got one across.
Anthony Cacchione continued to retire the Panthers in order in hopes CCNY could get the bats going.
In the fourth inning
Adrian Pena doubled and in the fifth inning
Elmy Antonio singled, but again, City would leave those runners on base.
As both teams entered the seventh inning, they looked for a way to bring in a run and take the victory. City couldn't get the bats going as they entered the bottom of the seventh.
Purchase started the inning off with a double. The next batter up was intentional walked. After stealing third, the Beavers put up one out. Unfortunately, Purchase's next batter got a base hit that brought in the first and game-winning run for the Panthers. Purchase took the first game of the doubleheader 1-0.
Cacchione was the sole pitcher for the Beavers. Against 25 batters, he struck out three and gave up just one run.
Game TwoPurchase started the scoring in game two with a big third inning. The Panthers would score four runs off of three hits to take a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers added one more run in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead.
City got things started in the fifth inning when
Uche Nwokelo singled. Josef Bystrik came in to pinch run for Nwokelo and made it to third off of a sacrifice by
Brendan Murphy and a balk. Cacchione singled to second base and brought in the first run for CCNY. That would be all City could get going and trailed Purchase 5-1.
Purchase added two more runs in the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, City brought the bats out looking for their first victory.
Adrian Pena and
Rob Mandich both singled and got themselves on base.
Matt Sola-Baker reached on a fielder's choice, which then advanced Pena to third.
Bystrik singled to right field which brought Pena in and advanced Sola-Baker to third. Sola-Baker did not wait for anyone to bring him home as he stole home and brought in another run for City who now trailed 7-3. CCNY would only get those two runs in the sixth.
Eric Giglio got it started for the Beavers in the final inning as this was their last chance to take the victory. Giglio was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cacchione was walked, but then Antonio's double play only left Giglio at third.
Siklas was walked and then stole second. Pena then singled and brought in both Giglio and Siklas as the Beavers trailed 7-5. Just when it seemed like the Beavers were making their comeback it would be cut short by the Panthers. City fell 7-5 in the second game of the doubleheader.
