The City College of New York baseball team was defeated 19-4 by Swarthmore on Friday afternoon. The Beavers fall to 0-17 on the season.
City got things started right away when
Anthony Cacchione was walked. He then stole second before
Michael Siklas walked. Siklas advanced to second on a failed pick off attempt, while Cacchione made his way to third. With
Adrian Pena at the base, he grounded out but he was able to bring Cacchione in for an early Beaver lead.
Swarthmore responded in the bottom of the first inning. Garnet scored one run off of one hit. Swarthmore then had a big second inning as they scored five runs off of five hits to take a 6-1 lead early.
Garnet would add four more to their lead in the fourth inning. City trailed 10-1 heading into the fifth inning.
Cacchione would get things started again for CCNY as he ended up on first after being hit by a pitch. SIklas would double to left field and advance Cacchione to third.
Rob Mandich would bring Cacchione in for City's second run off a sacrifice fly to left field. CCNY trailed 10-2 as Swarthmore came up to bat in the sixth inning.
Swarthmore added four runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh for a 15-2 lead.
For the third time, it would all start with Cacchione. In the eighth inning, Cacchione singled to center field and after Siklas was walked he would move to second. Pena singled to left field to bring in Cacchione. Siklas then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mandich was walked to load the bases.
Uche Nwokelo came in as a pinch hitter and fouled out, but brought in Siklas on the sacrifice. City would not get any more across in the eighth and finished the inning trailing 15-4.
Garnet had another big inning as they scored four for a 19-4 lead heading into the final inning. It would be a three-up, three-down final inning for the Beavers as they fell 19-4.
Cacchione had himself a day as he recorded one hit, but scored three of the four runs for City. Pena brought in two of the runs, while Mandich and Nwokelo brought in one each.
Joseph DeCarlo started on the mound for CCNY, but would only pitch two innings. DeCarlo struck out one and gave up six runs off of six hits, five of the runs were earned.
Cal Romano came in for four innings of relief. He would give up eight runs of off 11 hits, six of the runs were earned. Josef Bystrik pitched the seventh inning and gave up one run.
Steven Giglio pitched the final inning for the Beavers. Swarthmore scored four runs off of four hits with Giglio on the mound.
City will face off against St. Joseph's Brooklyn, Saturday, March 19 in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
