Beavers Fall in Midweek Contest

The City College of New York baseball team fell 6-2 to SUNY Maritime on Wednesday evening at Throggs Neck, New York.

Sacha Urbach started on the mound for City. The Beavers ace pitched one shutout innings before Cal Romano followed in the second inning. Romano recorded one strikeout in his shutout inning of the Privateer. Jeffrey Diaz came in for relief in the third inning.

It was a pitching duel as neither team could really get the bats swinging in the first couple of innings. Diaz only pitched one inning and gave up just one hit. Anthony Sautter came in for the fourth inning.

Maritime took the advantage in the fourth inning. Sautter gave up one run as he walked three for the Privateers to take a 1-0 lead.

It continued to be all about the pitchers as Steven Giglio came in for a shutout fifth inning. Giglio recorded one strikeout. Josef Bystrik followed Giglio on the mound and Maritime recorded one hit off of Bystrik.

City still could not get the bats swinging and it remained just a one-run game until the seventh inning. Elmy Antonio got the bats going with a single to left center. Uche Nwokelo followed that up with a home-run for CCNY to take a 2-1 lead. CCNY was unable to get anything else across and remained in control 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Maritime followed up the Beavers productive inning with one of their own. The Privateers recorded four runs off of just three hits and took a 5-2 lead. Lorenzo Hiraldo was the pitcher on the mound for the Beavers. Only two of the runs were earned for Hiraldo.

The Privateers added one more run in the eighth inning with Matt Sola-Baker coming in for what would be the final Maritime at bats. City got nothing across in the ninth inning as Maritime sealed their 6-2 victory.

City will travel to Abington, Pennsylvania for a double-header against Penn State Abington on Friday, March 25. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
