The City College of New York baseball fell in both games of a doubleheader to Penn State Abington on Friday evening. In the first game, the Beavers lost 3-0, followed by a 8-3 loss to the Nittany Lions.
Game One City got their first hit in the second inning when
Adrian Pena doubled to center field.
Rob Mandich was able to advance Pena to third with a hard hit single to left field. Neither would get across as Pena was thrown out at home.
It would be a 0-0 game until the third inning when the Nittany Lions scored one run off of one hit. Penn State Abington lead 1-0 at the end of the third.
CCNY got another try in the fourth with
Michael Siklas started the inning with a base hit. He was able to advance to third off of a wild pitch. No one could bring Siklas in and the Beavers trailed 1-0.
Steven Giglio started on the mound of the Beavers. He pitched 4.0 innings and gave up just one run off of three hits.
With the Beavers trailing by just one,
Joseph DeCarlo got things started in the fifth when he reached on an error. He would make it all the way to third off of a balk and with a base hit from
Anthony Cacchione. However, the Beavers would leave DeCarlo at third base.
Jeffrey Diaz came in for relief in the fifth inning for Giglio, S. During his two innings pitched, he gave up two runs off just three hits.
Penn State Abington picked up two more runs in the fifth inning. The Nittany Lions led 3-0 after five.
Neither team could get anything across in the final two innings and Penn State Abington took game one 3-0.
Game TwoCacchione started things off for the Beavers with a double.
Matt Sola-Baker advanced Cacchione to third. Siklas followed that with a double and scored Cacchione. After advancing to on a wild pitch, Pena was walked. Pena and Siklas completed a double-steal where Silklas stole home and Pena stole second. That would be all the Beavers would get across, but took a quick 2-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions would not let that lead stay for long as they followed City with three runs. After the first inning Penn State Abington led 3-2.
City got nothing across in the second inning, while the Nittany Lions recorded two more runs to take a 5-2 lead.
Siklas got things started in the third inning for CCNY. Pena followed that with a base hit of his own to advance Siklas to second. Mandich advanced Siklas to third, while he reached on a fielder's choice. Siklas scored while Mandich was caught stealing. City trailed 5-3 after three.
Penn State Abington picked up three more runs in the fourth inning. Penn State Abington led 8-3 after four.
For the final three innings, neither team would record a run. Penn State Abington took the second game 8-3.
Joseph DeCarlo started on the mound for the Beavers. In his 3.1 innings pitched, he gave up eight runs off of 11 hits. Josef Bystrik followed DeCarlo for the final 2.2 innings. He gave up just three hits.
City will host SUNYIT on Saturday, March 26 at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
