The City College of New York men's tennis team opened up their 2016 campaign with a 6-3 victory over Sarah Lawrence Wednesday evening.
To start the match off, the Beavers only took one of the doubles points.
Pavel Shapturenka and
Simon Kashfi defeated Sarah Lawrence doubles partners Matias Sanchez and Garrett Matias 8-4.
Austin Thai and
Brian Chen lost on court two 8-1, while
Daniel Villaroel and
Alejandro Varela fell 8-0. The Gryphons held a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Kashfi was the first singles point for the Beavers as he took down his opponent 6-3, 6-0.
Andrew Bregman was the next CCNY student-athlete to add to the Beavers score as he won 6-1, 6-1 on court five. With City in the lead 3-2, the Beavers felt strong in their position.
However, Sarah Lawrence tied it up with a victory on court six as Berry James defeated
Andrew Chen 6-4, 7-5. That would be the only point taken by the Gryphons in singles play. Both
Max Bernstein defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-1 on court four to give the Beavers back their lead. Shapturenka continued his hot streak from doubles play when he defeated Ian Gonzalez 6-3, 6-3 in the number three position. Varela helped seal the victory for CCNY with his impressive 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) win on court two.
City will face Baruch College on Friday, March 11 at 12:30 p.m. at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
