Box Score Bronxville, NY - The City College of New York women's volleyball team fell to the Sarah Lawrence in three sets in a strong effort in its 2016 season opener at the Campbell Sports Center on Thursday evening. After losing the first set 25-16, the Beavers dropped the second and third with set scores of 25-21 and 25-16.
The Beavers lead the first set, 8-6, before Sarah Lawrence would jump to a 14-4 run and take a 20-12 lead, allowing them to win set. The Beavers lead the second set 18-13. But Sarah Lawrence would rally and scored 12 of the last 15 points to win, 25-21. In the third set CCNY let up nine of the last 11 points of the match to allow the Gryphons 3-0 sweep.
Junior Veralucia Quispe led the team with five kills and 18 digs. Junior Angela Ubanwa posted six kills. Sophomore Lesly Polanco had 12 digs and a kill and Brigitte Bozer put seven digs. Freshmen Tenaya Hawkins had a team high 15 assists.
CCNY will play its next game on the road against SUNY Old Westbury on Tuesday at 6PM. The team will play its first CUNYAC games on Saturday, Sep.10 in a tri-match with Lehman and College of Staten Island at Lehman College.
