New York, NY - The City College men's basketball team defeated Baruch College 73-69 on Saturday afternoon to end a three-game losing streak. The conference victory moves CCNY to second place owning the tie breaker over Lehman, in the CUNYAC standings.
In the first half, David Solano would hit four three-pointers for the Beavers. With two second left in half, Dominick Priolo scored on a layup to put CCNY up 36-to-21 at halftime.
In the second half, City's biggest lead was 18-points after a jumper from Salvatore Palazzlo. Midway thought the second half, Baruch would go on a 16-to-6 run to bring the within one point (58-57).
Free throws by Chimaechi Ekekeugbor (03:25), gave the Bearcats the first lead of the game since the first half.
A layup from Mark Richards would help CCNY regain the lead (62-61) with 3:25 remaining. CCNY's lead would go up to seven-points after a good free throw from Khalil Hamer with 36 seconds left in the game.
A three-pointer by Baruch's Bryler Paige and a layup from Doyin Isaac would help the Bearcats bring the game within two points (71-69) with 18 seconds left.
But a foul from Baruch's Bryler Paige would sent David Solano to the free throw, making good on both attempts. City College would seal the game 73-69.
Senior David Solano led the Beavers with 15-points, connecting on four three pointers in the game. Senior Khalil Hamer added 13 points, nine assist and five rebounds. Senior Mark Richards had 13 points (6-for-7 from the field) and five rebounds for the Lavender & Black. Senior Robbie Dionisio posted a game-high 13 rebounds and nine points. Freshmen Dominick Priolo played well off the bench for the team, chipping in 11-points (9-for-11 from the free throw line) and six rebounds
Baruch's Chimaechi Ekekeugbor led the home team with a 29-points and six rebounds before fouling out of the contest.
The Beavers out shot Baruch in the contest 46.3 percent to 38.9 percent. The Beavers made due with an 18-for-25 effort from the free throw line during the game. The Beavers won the rebounding battle, with a 45-to-30 edge.
The City College Men's Basketball team is now improves to 10-9 overall and 8-4 in conference play this season. The team will play the Brooklyn College next on Tuesday (Jan. 31) on the road at 7:00pm.
