CCNY Baseball Holds Off UMPI, 11-7

Yaphank, NY - A grand slam in the sixth inning and a three run homer in the seventh, propelled the City College baseball team to a 11-7 victory late Wednesday afternoon over The University of Maine at Presque Isle in conference action.

The win was the Beavers' second in a row and moves their overall record to 3-7 while evening their mark in conference play to 2-2. UMPI drops to 2-16 overall and 0-1 in the league.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMPI grabbed a very quick lead as Martin Egan hit an RBI double to score Jesus Garcia.
  • In their next at-bat, Ryan Sanders scored after Matt Curry grounded out to third. 
  • In the third, Matt Cauchon scored off Ryan Sanders' sacrifice fly to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.
  • In the fourth, Anthony Cacchione hit a one-run triple to plate Jonathan Abreu for the teams first run.
  • In the next at-bat, Cacchione scored on Adrian Pena's deep fly ball to right field to narrow the score to 3-2.
  • The Beavers took a 6-3 lead in the sixth, as Pena hit a grand slam to center field.
  • UMPI answered with four runs in the top of the seventh to take an 7-6 lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Cacchione hit a three-run homer to recapture the lead (9-7).
  • CCNY added a pair of runs in the eighth on a two run-scoring double by Edgar Arango (11-7).
 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Adrian Pena collected five RBI's in the game on a grand slam and sacrifice fly ball.  He now leads the team with 11 total this season.
  • The two home runs in the game by Cacchione and Pena matched the team's total for the previous nine games.
  • Jacob Schwartz worked 3.0 innings to get the win for CCNY. The freshman left hander held UMPI to no runs on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
 

UP NEXT

  • The CCNY baseball team returns to the road to face NYU Friday at 1pm at MCU Park. The Beavers will then travel to the Bronx, NY for a conference doubleheader  against Lehman College Saturday afternoon and return home for a single game with the Lightening on Sunday at 12pm.
