New Rochelle, N.Y. - The City College of New York baseball team spilt a doubleheader with CUNYAC rival John Jay College on Sunday afternoon. CCNY earned a victory in game one of the doubleheader, 8-4, while the Bloodhounds claimed game two 3-0.
Prior to the start of game two, head coach Steve Macias and the team honored the program's lone senior Adrian Pena for his outstanding career. Pena ends his playing career as a Beaver as the all-time hits leader.
Game 1:
John Jay struck first in the top of the first inning. Dylan Laudano drove home Zach Hyde on a double to right field.
CCNY answered back in the bottom of first with a run of their own. Freshmen Cooper York scored the tying run on junior Anthony Cacchione's sacrifice fly to center field.
The Bloodhounds scored twice in the top of the second. The teams runs came off a sacrifice fly, driving in Jurrel Diaz and a one-run single by R.J. Davila. They took a 4-1 advantage in the third on a one-run double to center field by Charlee Rodriguez.
The Beavers stormed back in their half of the sixth inning. The frame started with a double down the left line by senior Adrian Pena. Cacchione plated the first run with a base hit to right side. After junior Anthony Sautter walked on four pitches and rookie Stephen Peters reached first on a base hit,sophomore Eric Giglio turned the carousel with a two-run scoring hit to center field to even the game at 4-4. Two batters later, junior Edgar Arango notched a base hit to drive in Peters. York stroked a base hit RBI to center field, scoring Eric Giglio. Pena had an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, scoring pinch runner Brandon Gianikos. After Cacchione walked, York stole home to cap off the sixth-inning blitz.
Pena had added a pair of hits in game one, while Cacchione and Giglio had two RBI's apiece for the Beavers. Seven different CCNY players accounted for the team's eight runs.
Sophomore Joe Bystrik earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. Junior RHP Jeffrey Diaz relieved pinched, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Game 2:
The Bloodhounds got on the boards with a runs scored in the fourth and fifth innings. Brian Cabral ripped a single base hit RBI for the teams first run. In the fifth, a failed pickoff by CCNY allowed Zach Hyde to steal home. Later in the inning, Dylan Laudano plated Jason Gonzalez on a RBI single up the middle.
John Jay's Sean Napier held the Beavers to no runs in seven innings of work, allowing only on six hits and striking out three batters.
CCNY junior Anthony Cacchione matched Napier's seven-inning performance. He tossed all seven innings, allowing three runs while scattering six hits and recording six strikeouts in the complete game loss.
