THROGGS NECK, NY – The CCNY baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, however were unable to get past SUNY Maritime in a non-conference game Wednesday evening, falling 10-8.
CCNY jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first behind
Anthony Sautter's RBI single.
The Beavers added another run an inning later.
Hamley Volquez produced the second run by notching an RBI double to right center for a 2-0 lead.
Trailing 2-0, Maritime answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Privateers were able to tally three runs on five hits and one error to take a 3-2 lead in the contest.
After three scoreless innings, The Privateers extended their lead in the sixth frame with two runs. Maritime capitalized on three hits and two errors to push their lead to 5-2.
Trailing in the top of the seventh, the Beavers knotted up the game with three runs.
Rob Mandich drove in the first run with a single to left center to score
Brandon Gianikos. One batter later, Volquez tied the game with a two-run homer to right field.
The Privateers quickly responded to regain the lead with a five runs on two hits and four errors.
Trailing 10-5 in the top of the ninth with runners on first and second,
Andrew Lopez singled to the shortstop to drive in one run to cut the deficit to 10-6. In the next at-bat,
Cooper York singled in Volquez to bring the Beavers to within three runs. With bases loaded, the Beavers were able to pull out one run on a double play.
However, Maritime got the final out, ending the inning and rally as the Privateers would take to game 10-8.
Mandich led the Lavender & Black with three hits, two runs, and an RBI while Volquez added two hits with two runs scored and three RBI's.
CCNY is next in action on Saturday, traveling conference foe John Jay College for a 12:00 pm doubleheader at MCU Park.
