Baseball Splits With New Rochelle on Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The City College of New York baseball team split a doubleheader against the College of New Rochelle on Sunday, dropping Game One, 9-1 before winning in Game Two, 15-1 on Senior Day.

Game One: New Rochelle 9, CCNY 1
The College of New Rochelle got ahead early after the Blue Angels went yard for a two-RBI homer in the first inning.

CCNY responded in the next half inning with a run on a single from senior Anthony Cacchione.

In the third inning, CNR's lead grew to 7-1. The Blue Angels plated five runs on four hits in the frame.
 
New Rochelle continued to extend their lead with a run in each of the fourth and seventh frames to take the opener from CCNY, 9-1.

Senior Jeffrey Diaz pitched the first 2.2 innings of work with two strikeouts before handing the ball over to junior Josef Bystrik for the last 4.1 innings of relief with Bystrik notching three strikeouts.

Game Two: CCNY 15, New Rochelle 1
In the nightcap, CCNY was able to turn the offensive attack around as the group put together 15 runs on a season-high 21 hits.

The Beavers opened with four runs in the fourth inning. Brandon Gianikos singled to lead off the inning, and then quickly stole second. Gianikos scored after Hamley Volquez doubled to left field to knot things up at 1-1. Two at-bats later, freshman Benjamin Jacquez III hit an RBI single to center field, plating Volquez. Senior Edgar Arango followed, with a base hit RBI of his own for the teams third run of the inning. Sophomore Stephen Peters batted in the fourth run of the inning, doubling through the left side.

In the fifth inning, Volquez picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to third base, taking a 5-1 lead.

CCNY furthered the lead with a run in the sixth inning, combining for 10 runs on 11 hits to hold a comfortable 15-1 advantage. The frame was highlighted by Cacchione's two hits and two RBI's, and Peters first career grand slam.

Cacchione led the way for CCNY, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Peters finished going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs, and five RBI Volquez went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.

Senior Anthony Sautter and sophomore Cooper York each picked up two hits in the game, with York scoring two runs and Sautter notching one.

In addition to the scoring offense, Cacchione played a stellar game on the hill. Cacchione logged a complete seven innings of work with six strikeouts and allowed only one run on three hits, securing his third win of the season 

The Beavers return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 11, when they travel to play Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY.
