BROOKLYN, NY -- The City College of New York women's volleyball team (7-6, 3-3 CUNYAC) moved above .500 for the first time this season with a dominant 25-16, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Medgar Evers (0-16, 0-5 CUNYAC) at the Cougars Cave on Thursday night. The Beavers have now won three in a row and six out of seven.
It was all CCNY from the start. The Beavers opened the match by scoring seven of the first eight points. CCNY extended its lead to 16-9 on a
Kayla Oge (New City, NY) kill before Medgar Evers responded with a 7-2 run to pull within 18-16. However, CCNY closed the set on a seven-point rally and took the frame by a 25-16 count.
There were four early ties in the second set before a kill by
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) sparked a 6-1 CCNY spurt that gave the Beavers an 11-6 lead. After the Cougars got back within two at 14-12, CCNY went on a 9-2 run to open up a 23-14 advantage. Torres finished off the 25-16 set with with her fifth and sixth kills of the period.
In the third set, CCNY built a 6-0 lead and never looked back. Medgar Evers trimmed its deficit to three at 10-7, but the Beavers countered with a 6-1 spurt that made it 16-8. An 8-0 CCNY rally, capped by four successive
Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) service aces set up match point at 24-11, and the Beavers wrapped up the sweep with a 25-13 set win. CCNY slammed 16 kills and hit a combined .414 (four errors, 29 attempts) in the third set.
Torres hit .579 in the match, smashing 11 kills without an error in 19 swings.
Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) added 10 kills on .421 hitting, while
Arianna Rivas (New York, NY) had nine kills and posted a .353 hitting percentage. Han paced the Beavers with nine kills and four aces, and
Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) contributed seven digs and three aces.
Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY), meanwhile, handed out 32 assists. As a team, CCNY hit .293 (36-12-82) in the victory.
For the Cougars, Sashamoni Burnett led the way with five kills, four aces and three blocks. Noshka Gonzalez-Sanchez, meanwhile, tallied four kills and six digs. Quiara Brye Bey and Britenie Marcelus registered seven digs apiece, and Cristina Carnegie distributed 11 assists.
CCNY wraps up its CUNYAC schedule on Tuesday night, when Lehman (3-18, 2-4 CUNYAC) visits Nat Holman Gymnasium at 7 p.m. With a victory over the Lightning, the Beavers will clinch a home match in the first round of the CUNYAC Tournament.
