Beavers Clinch Home Playoff Match

NEW YORK -- For the first time in five seasons, there will be a CUNY Athletic Conference women's volleyball playoff match at Nat Holman Gymnasium.  The City College of New York (8-6, 4-3 CUNYAC) clinched fourth place and home-court advantage in the first round of the CUNYAC Tournament with a 25-13, 25-10, 25-17 victory over Lehman (3-19, 2-5 CUNYAC) at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY) had five service aces in the match, four of which came during a 12-0 rally late in the second set.  She also served to start the third set, and the Beavers rattled off four straight points.  In total, Harambasic ended up serving 18 out of 19 points between the two periods.  The run was only interruped when Lehman staved off a set point at 24-9 in the second stanza.  Kayla Oge (New City, NY) slammed a kill on the next point, though, finishing off the set, 25-10.

In addition to her five aces, Harambasic had 26 assists and five digs.  Oge finished with 11 kills on .714 hitting, and Arianna Rivas (New York, NY) recorded five kills.  Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY), Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) and Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) tallied 10 digs apiece, as CCNY outdug Lehman 45-39.  The Beavers hit a combined .188 (29 kills, 13 errors, 85 attempts) in the match.  CCNY also served 12 aces overall.

Franchesca Acevedo paced the Lightning with five kills and five aces.  Ariana Pradieu added four kills, while Heder Rodriguez handed out 12 assists.  Yari Peguero, meanwhile, registered 25 digs.

Two of Acevedo's aces came early in the first set, as Lehman jumped out to a 3-0 lead.  A 6-1 CCNY run put the Beavers up 6-4, but the Lightning responded with a 5-2 spurt to go back in front, 9-8.  Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) followed with a kill, though, igniting a 17-4 rally to end the set.  CCNY took the opening frame by a 25-13 count.

That momentum carried into the second set, as the Beavers scored the first seven points of the stanza.  Lehman pulled within three at 12-9 before an Oge kill gave the serve back to CCNY, starting Harambasic's run.

After the Beavers built their 4-0 cushion in the third set, Lehman rallied to take a 9-5 advantage.  CCNY pulled back within one when a Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) ace made it 10-9, but the Lightning claimed the next two points to push the margin back to three, 12-9.  A Rivas kill put CCNY back in front, 15-14, and started a 4-0 rally for the Beavers.  Lehman got back within two at 18-16, then Oge smashed a kill to ignite a 6-1 spurt that closed out the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.

It was the Beavers' fourth straight win and their seventh in their last eight outings.  CCNY's four conference wins this season are its most since 2014, which was also the last time it hosted a playoff match.

CCNY has five contests left before the CUNYAC Tournament.  The Beavers visit Rutgers-Newark (16-9) at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.
