NEWARK, NJ -- The City College of New York women's volleyball team hit the road on Thursday night for a non-conference matchup with Rutgers-Newark. The Beavers (8-7) won the first set before the Scarlet Raiders (17-9) rallied to post a 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-8 victory at the Golden Dome.
After CCNY jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set, Rutgers-Newark responded with an 8-3 run to cut the Beavers' cushion to one, 11-10. CCNY countered with a 7-3 rally of its own to regain an 18-13 advantage, but the Scarlet Raiders once again answered, going on a 7-2 spurt to pull ahead, 20-19. Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) served back-to-back aces for CCNY. The scored was deadlocked once again at 23-23 when
Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) pounded two consecutive kills to give the Beavers a 25-23 set win.
Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY) opened the second set with an ace, but Rutgers-Newark scored 13 of the next 16 points to go up 13-4. After the Scarlet Raiders extended their advantage to 17-7, the Beavers went on an 8-1 run to pull within three, 18-15. However, Rutgers-Newark responded with a 5-1 spurt that made it 23-16, and the Scarlet Raiders evened the match by claiming the set, 25-19.
In the third set, CCNY went up 4-1 before Rutgers-Newark rallied to take a 9-6 lead. After consecutive Harambasic aces tied it at 10-10, the Scarlet Raiders captured 11 of the next 12 points to build a 21-11 cushion. Rutgers-Newark took the set 25-14 to go up 2-1 in the match.
Rutgers-Newark then started the fourth set on a 10-2 run and never looke back. CCNY claimed consecutive points to get within 10-4, but would pull no closer, as the Scarlet Raiders closed out the victory with a 25-8 set win. Rutgers-Newark made just one attack error in the period, hitting a combined .375 (10 kills, 24 attempts).
Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY) led the Beavers with nine kills and 15 digs.
Kayla Oge (New City, NY) contributed seven kills and four blocks, while Harambasic had 20 assists and nine digs to go along with four aces.
Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) tallied 14 digs and Han had 12 digs, as CCNY held a 60-58 edge in that category.
For the Scarlet Raiders, Comfort Akinbo slammed a match-high 18 kills and Katy Gregoire handed out 29 assists. She also served seven of Rutgers-Newark's 16 aces. Brione Lockett contributed 24 digs, while Dahlia Shoukry registered five blocks. The Scarlet Raiders hit .156 (39-20-122) as a team.
CCNY returns to action on Friday night, when Old Westbury (8-10) visits Nat Holman Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
